Comments and Other Information

Valor Academy is a 5th through 8th grade charter school for the communities of North Hollywood, Arleta, and Panorama City. The school was chartered by the Los Angeles Unified School District in April of 2009 and opened in August of 2009 with a class of 5th graders. We will continue accepting fifth graders, and grow by one grade level each year until Valor consists of all four grades by 2012-13. We are committed to putting every child on a clear path to college using proven techniques that include a longer school day, excellent teachers, free tutoring, a disciplined school culture that teaches self-respect, frequent communication with parents, an intense focus on literacy and math and enriching after school programs Bright Star Schools’ unique approach to public school education has produced outstanding results. In California, the primary measure of academic performance and growth is a school’s Academic Performance Index (“API”) score – a number that ranges from 200 to 1000. Since opening, Bright Star’s schools have earned some of the highest API scores in the Los Angeles Unified School District (“LAUSD”). Stella Academy’s 2011 growth API score of 825 ranks it among the top twenty middle schools regardless of demographics, and the sixth performing middle school in LAUSD among schools that share a similar demographic and socioeconomic profile. BSSCA’s 2011 API score of 842 ranks it eighth among all LAUSD high schools, and fourth among high schools with a similar profile.
