Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

Classroom Duties:

  • Provide specialized instructional support for students with mild to moderate disabilities (specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, other health impairment, mild autism, speech/language disorders, hard of hearing) in the regular classroom.  This includes, but is not limited to, implementing IEP accommodations and modifications, collecting data on IEP goals, providing small group and individualized instruction to reinforce key concepts, enforcing school and classroom rules, providing note-taking assistance for students, collaborating with the general education teachers, rephrasing and/or providing classroom directions in a variety of ways, checking for mastery of new material, assisting students with organization, and decreasing distractions.

After-School Duties:

  • Provide small group and individual homework/study skills support in the after-school program by working with various students with and without disabilities.  Duties also include enforcing school and program rules, taking daily attendance, and communicating with lead program teachers.  

Assistant Duties:

  • Assist education specialist with data collection, filing, copying, organizing, and lesson planning before and after school.  

Necessary Qualities:

  • All special education assistant candidates must be:
    • Professional in appearance, attitude, and interactions with students, staff members, and parents
    • Patient and willing to work with students with numerous academic and behavioral difficulties
    • Collaborative and team-oriented
    • Hands-on and mobile in various classroom settings.
    • Build professional relationships with students that will enable proper enforcement and follow-through on school and classroom behavior expectations
    • Able to manage a day-to-day schedule that includes working in up to four different classrooms across three different grade levels
    • Reliable at adhering to the confidentiality and legal standards set forth in special education law
    • Be proactive in the classrooms by initiating interactions with students, knowing and assisting with class routines, and initiating helping the general ed. teachers with delivery of lessons.
