Definition Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the District Occupational Therapist provides assessment and consultation to parents and staff; therapy in the areas of therapy sensory processing, visual motor skills, dexterity, self-help skills, pre-vocational skills, communication systems and switch controls. Examples of Duties Conduct educationally related or early intervention occupational therapy screenings and assessments for students referred. Write assessment reports according to specified guidelines. Develop long and short-term goals and objectives for the IEP, IFSP or the 504 team meetings. Develop therapy intervention plans, which provides for classroom or home intervention strategies. Communicate via oral, written or electronic means with all staff involved and with parents; may act as a liaison between the school district and other agencies such as California Children's Services, Inland Regional Center and community physicians. Develop procedures, reporting forms and records to coordinate and manage case load. Assist in the assessment of school facilities and educational activities and make recommendations to ensure accessibility and reasonable accommodations to school environments for individuals with disabilities. Collaborate with teachers and instructional aides instructing them in specific techniques. Develop and implement training and in services for educational staff and parents. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: Educational and developmental needs of young children with specific disabilities in an educational environment. Ability to: Establish and meet deadlines; work accurately, independently, and exercise sound judgment. Ability to prepare reports, understand and carry out oral and written directions; to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Education and Experience Education: Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in occupational therapy. Experience: Minimum two years of full time experience providing occupational therapy services with at least one year experience providing occupational therapy services in a pediatric clinical setting. License requirements California Occupational Therapy Certification or License. Valid California Driver's License. First Aid and CPR or able to obtain certificate within 30 days of employment. Physical Abilities The ability to lift, or carry 50 pounds, push/pull 100 pounds or carrying of heavy objects; bend, walk and stand for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate adaptive equipment and classroom instructional materials. Adequate visual and hearing acuity, and speaking ability to exchange information and provide assistance to students; physically manipulating students to move students in and out of wheelchairs or orthopedic equipment; ability to grip and grasp, push and pull, lift, squat, kneel and twist, reach overhead above shoulders and horizontally.
