BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation, perform routine grounds maintenance duties at a specific district location; mow, edge, and rake lawns and athletic fields.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Representative Duties:  (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below.  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.)

  • Performs routine grounds maintenance duties at a specific District location; mows, edges, and rakes lawns and athletic fields;  E

 

  • Prunes and trims trees, hedges, and shrubs; weeds and rakes grounds;  E

 

  • Rakes leaves and removes trash;  E

 

  • Assists in resurfacing and reseeding athletic fields; assists in pesticide application to athletic field and school grounds; assists other grounds personnel to drag, mark, and line athletic fields for events as assigned;  E

 

  • Maintains parking lots and driveways; utilizes blowers and brooms to gather rubbish and places in appropriate receptacles;  E

 

  • Operates and maintains lawn mowers, edgers, hedge trimmer, and hand and power tools and related equipment used in grounds maintenance work; makes routine adjustments and minor repairs to equipment;  E

 

  • Operates a vehicle to pick up and deliver equipment and materials as assigned;

 

  • Assures proper working condition of equipment for athletic events;

 

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Operation of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping
  • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work
  • Health and safety regulations
  • Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees, and shrubs

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, and weeding
  • Perform routine and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties
  • Maintain athletic fields in a safe condition
  • Lift heavy objects
  • Use a variety of tools and machines utilized in the basic trade
  • Safely operate power equipment
  • Perform heavy physical labor
  • Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake, and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Outside environment; subject to extreme weather conditions, dust, and noise from equipment operation.  Position requires the ability to perform moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds, bending, kneeling, pulling, and operate power tools, equipment, and vehicles. Incumbents may be exposed to noise from equipment operation, working around machinery with moving parts, fumes, smoke or gases, hazardous materials, and extreme heat.
