HEMET UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 1791 W. Acacia Ave. - Hemet, CA 92545 (951) 765-5100 FACILITIES MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN JOB SUMMARY Positions in this class are assign to District schools that are located far away from ready access to centralized maintenance and grounds services. This position reports to the school Principal for general directions and supervision, and to the Grounds and Custodial Manager for technical guidance. The incumbent is required to perform a variety of multi-skilled maintenance duties in addition to performing regular custodial tasks and to act as a working lead person. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS ~ Perform miscellaneous repair work; ~ Inspect buildings and equipment periodically as assigned, identifying and reporting to principal any major malfunctions or services needing the services of the District's maintenance department; ~ Develop and implement a systematic building maintenance and repair program; ~ Inspect, service, maintain or repair playground equipment, fences, gates, windows and door locks, openers and closers; ~ Minor installation of hardware; ~ Inspect, service maintain or repair electrical fixtures, bell systems, clocks, sockets, switches and exposed wires; ~ Free plumbing fixtures, replace washers and gaskets; ~ Clear drains and lines of obstructions; ~ Perform minor carpentry, heating and ventilation, audio-visual equipment repairs and preventive maintenance; ~ Assist in larger projects involving the services of a tradesperson; ~ Act as a lead custodian, overseeing and coordinating work schedules and assignments of custodians; ~ Coordinate and assign set-ups for evening use of facilities and equipment; ~ Assume lead role in setting up and coordinating facility and furniture renovation and heavy cleaning programs during summer and other recess periods; ~ Initiate work orders and requisitions; ~ Order custodial supplies and maintain and store supplies and equipment; ~ Security of all facilities including activating and turning off security systems, securing gates, doors and windows; ~ Call back from off duty in cases of emergencies; ~ Perform simple clerical tasks and complete reports; ~ Perform duties listed for Head Custodian. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS KNOWLEDGE OF ~ Common tools, materials, and equipment used in the various building and maintenance trades; ~ Cleaning methods, products and equipment; ~ Safe work methods and procedures; ~ Basic practices and application of supervision and training of personnel; ~ Basic record keeping and routine clerical tasks; ~ Basic public relations skills; ~ Districts' safety and securing practices. ABILITY TO ~ Use hand and power tools and equipment common to the maintenance trades; ~ Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ~ Work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches; ~ Maintain simple records and prepare meaningful reports as required; ~ Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ~ Write routine reports and correspondence; ~ Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measures, using whole numbers, common factions, and decimals. ~ Follow established cleaning methods, schedules and procedures; ~ Cope with problems and emergencies; ~ Calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; ~ Understand and carry out oral and written directions; ~ Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work. ~ Respond appropriately to direction and changes in work setting; ~ Organize tasks, set priorities, maintain established pace; ~ Work with minimal supervision; ~ Perform repetitive tasks; ~ Manage multiple tasks; ~ Demonstrate good problem-solving skills. EDUCATION High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above. EXPERIENCE ~ Two (2) years of experience in general maintenance work in one or more of the building trades and general building maintenance; ~ or One (1) year of experience at or equivalent to the level of Custodian II or Head Custodian. REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES ~ If driving a vehicle is required in the performance of duties, operator must possess a valid California Driver's License, maintain possession of such license; ~ Have an acceptable driving record; ~ Must be insurable at standard rates by District's insurance carrier; ~ As long as driving is required for a position operator must maintain such insurability. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently), to access areas and to operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking. Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; floor buffer vibration; seasonal outdoor temperatures (30o -120o) and possible exposure to dust, wind, sun and insects. Night custodian may work alone. Be subject to call back from off duty in cases of emergencies. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job. EMPLOYMENT STATUS Bargaining Unit Position February 2002 Classified Bargaining Unit positions in the Hemet Unified School District are subject to an agency fee arrangement. All applicants are subject to a fingerprint clearance (at applicant’s expense) through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI). Authorization for employment will not be granted until the fingerprint clearance from DOJ/FBI has been accepted. This process takes approximately two (2) to five (5) working days.
