Trinity County Office of Education Job Description

School Psychologist

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Act as School Psychologist for assigned schools within Trinity County.  The primary objective is the application of scientific principles of learning and behavior to ameliorate school-related problems and to facilitate the learning and development of children in Trinity County schools.

 

REPORTS TO:               SELPA Director or Designee and

                                          Trinity County Superintendent of Schools

 

WORK YEAR:                189 Days  (194- 5 furlough Days)

 

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Work with students, teachers, parents and administrators to resolve students’ learning and behavior problems. 
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs, behavior management procedures and other services provided in a school setting.
  • Use techniques such as interviewing and testing to advise staff and students how to deal with problems of everyday living.
  • Coordinates, implements and interprets assessment for all referred students and assures legal and timely completion
  • Provides comprehensive written and oral psychological reports containing all gathered data in an analytical manner, making recommendations based thereon, including periodic reevaluation of students with specific learning and behavioral disabilities.
  • Conducts individual, group or facilitative counseling to enhance students’ personal and school adjustment.
  • Consult with parents to assist in understanding the learning and adjustment processes of students
  • Provide home visits when necessary and appropriate
  • Consults with community agencies such as probation departments, mental health, and welfare departments concerning pupils who are being served by such community agencies.
  • Acts as Administrative designee at IEP meetings when not serving as School Psychologist

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS,  LICENSE and CREDENTIAL

  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university;  Master’s degree desirable
  • Possess or be eligible to possess a valid California Pupil Personnel Service credential authorizing service as a School Psychologist or participate in CTC approved intern program authorizing service as a School Psychologist
  • Must have passed CBEST
  • Knowledge of current and appropriate assessment tools, counseling techniques and behavioral and classroom management programs
  • Ability to work cooperatively with support services, including all special services and other school and county office personnel
  • Possession of a valid California State driver’s license

 

 

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

 

  • Effective practices for providing psych services to students in school settings
  • Laws, rules and regulations related to the provision of psychological services to children in a school setting
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations for special education programs
  • Diversity within Trinity County, including academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnicity backgrounds of students
  • Child development, behavioral change, individual education programming, counseling and assessment techniques

 

Ability to:

 

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with school staff, families and members of other professional disciplines
  • Organize and manage a caseload at multiple sites
  • Recognize a potential crisis and deliver appropriate crisis intervention services
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, policies, regulations, requirements and restrictions
  • Accurately read, interpret, apply and explain regulations, policies and procedures to others
  • Be observant, emotionally stable, mature and deal effectively with others.
  • Operate a computer, including database entry
  • Work well under pressure and maintain confidentiality, as appropriate for the position
  • Utilize strong organizational skills including maintaining accurate records and effectively developing and maintaining a data base
  • Operate a motor vehicle

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

  • Sitting, standing and/or driving for extended periods of time to access school sites and meeting locations
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, office and multimedia equipment
  • Good sensory abilities including perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity and depth perception to observe and monitor student behavior in school settings
  • Persons performing service in this position classification may need to exert in excess of 40 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
  • Applicant will be required to obtain fingerprint clearance and pass a general health exam, including drug screening, prior to hiring
