I. Position Title

II. Position Description

 

Under general supervision, to do skilled work in the installation, repair, adjustment, and replacement of locks on lockers, doors and cabinets; to make keys; and to do related work as may be required. A major portion of the time of positions in this class is spent performing skilled locksmithing work. Incumbents regularly carry out a wide range of general maintenance outside the locksmithing trade. As assigned, incumbents will perform tasks in other trades at an unskilled and/or semi-skilled level as helper or independently.

 

III. Example of Duties/Responsibilities

 

A. Installs new locks, repairs and opens locks, and changes lock combinations using hand tools and equipment-

B. Disassembles locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs and other parts-

E

C. Shorten tumblers, using file, and inserts new or repaired tumblers into lock to change combination-

E

 

 

 

D. Cuts new or duplicate keys, using key cutting machine-

E

E. Establishes keying system for new sites-

E  

F. Sets up and maintains master key systems and maintains records and security of duplicate keys-

E

 

G. Repairs panic bar and other exit hardware-

E

H. Makes estimates or labor and material costs for jobs-

E

I. Requisitions, orders and stores supplies and materials-

E  

J. Maintains gas, oil and maintenance areas by performing unskilled, semi-skilled duties-

IV. Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

•Construction and repair of various makes of locks

•Variety of locks available and the best use for each type

•Key code systems

•Installation, adjustment, and repair of panic door exit devices and hydraulic door closures and floor hinges

Ability to:

•Maintain and repair a variety of locks and related hardware

•Set up master key systems and make master keys

•Read blueprints and specifications

•Operate key code and tracing machines

•Use depth keys

•Set up keying schedules

•Keep simple records

•Analyze lock and hardware requirements and malfunctions

•Select and order parts and supplies from catalogues

•Estimate time and materials for small projects

•Understand and carry out written and oral directions

•Work effectively with others

•Acts as District liaison between architect and vendors in relation to locks and related hardware

•Methods, tools, practices, parts, and types of equipment used in the trade of a locksmith

Education and Experience

 

•Education: Graduation from High School or equivalent

•Experience: One (1) year of experience as a journeyman level locksmith or four (4) years of progressively more responsible experience in assisting in the repair, maintenance and replacement of locks, keys, and related equipment.

License

•Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
