Job Description / Essential Elements: Print   
DEFINITION Under direct supervision, does general clerical work of minimum difficulty; typing and general office duties which follow particular routines; answer telephones and personal inquires of a general nature; do filing; backstop other desks; and perform related clerical work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties include typing, proofreading, answering telephones, sorting and filing documents; performing simple arithmetic calculations and operating office machines; checking and recording and verifying information on records; receives, sorts, and distributes mail, acts as an office receptionist. SUPERVISION FROM Positions in this class receive general supervision from a site administrator or designee, Secretary II – IV, Adult Education Secretary, and Clerk III. SUPERVISION OVER None. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and math; standard office procedures. Ability to: Perform a variety of basic clerical work with accuracy and speed; learn to operate standard office equipment; make arithmetical calculations; receive and give information over the telephone or in person in a courteous manner; work efficiently with frequent interruptions; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; learn and follow office routines; operate standard office equipment (computer, printers, calculators, etc.); type a net corrected speed of 30 words per minute; pass District administered test with a score of 70% or better. PERSONAL QUALITIES Patience; flexibility; judgment; willingness to learn operation of office equipment (computers, printers, calculators, etc.) and procedures. PHYSICAL ABILITIES Good physical condition as determined by pre- and post-employment inquiries and health report; must pass District physical examination which includes drug screening; provide proof of negative TB test at time of hiring. Clerk I Job Description Page Two EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; and combination of training, experience and education that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities; prefer at least one (1) year of clerical experience.
