SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHER'S AIDE-HEAD START BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of a center director, Site Supervisor, principal or teacher, instruct and care for students and perform routine classroom duties in Head Start. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Work with students individually or in small groups, reinforcing or following up on instruction provided by the teacher. E Maintain records such as attendance and scores. E Prepare special materials and games and operate instructional equipment. E Duplicate materials and prepare charts and other instructional materials. E Maintain classroom or learning facility in a clean, organized, and healthful manner. E Supervise students on the school grounds. E Accompany teacher on home visits and/or make telephone calls to parents. E Interpret for non-English-speaking students or parents. E Assist in preparation of snacks. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish. ABILITY TO: Assist with activities in the classroom. Learn the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties. Understand the needs of students. Make simple arithmetic calculations. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work cooperatively with others. Communicate effectively with others. ABILITY TO (CONTINUED): Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures, and policies. Work confidentially with discretion. Perform simple clerical duties. Speak and read Spanish. Perform the essential functions of the job. Work with site staff in assessing and documenting children’s abilities. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination or equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by working with small children. Applicant must have completed of a minimum of six (6) units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferably in Child Growth and Development/Child Family and Community/ Child and Family Relations and/or programs/curriculum as required by Community Care Licensing Division. Course work must be completed with a “C” or better from a regionally accredited college. Must meet NCLB requirements – to meet requirement, applicants must possess either an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or 48 semester units from college/university or pass District examination. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom and playground environment. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Seeing to monitor student work and read materials. Hearing and speaking accurately to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate instructional equipment. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Sitting or standing for extended periods. Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding thirty (30) pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
