DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES To perform specialized grounds, gardening and maintenance work and/or to operate motorized grounds equipment as part of a grounds keeping crew. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class performs a variety of general and specialized grounds, gardening, and maintenance duties in the upkeep of district/school sites. Positions in this job class are assigned to a grounds keeping crew which performs grounds keeping functions. SUPERVISOR: Deputy Superintendent TYPICAL DUTIES • May operate grounds equipment such as trucks, riding mowers, large rotary or gang mowers, tractors, dump trucks, rollers, trenchers, fork lifts, and other ground maintenance equipment as assigned • May assist in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems • May make minor repairs, and adjustments to sprinkler lines, heads, valves, and automatic timers • May assist with the repair of small motors related to grounds keeping equipment • Hauls sand, bark, and other materials for grounds projects to include gravel, loam, trash, etc. • Levels, repairs, and performs grounds maintenance to athletic fields; aerates lawns • Installs, maintains, and repairs fences, athletic equipment, and play ground equipment • Plants, cultivates, prunes, trims, waters, and sprays trees; shrubs, weeds, hedges, and plants • Plants, fertilizes, waters, mows, edges, weeds, and cares for lawns, fence lines, athletic fields, runways, pits, etc. • Prepares and treats soil for planting • Operates hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers, edgers, trimmers, sweepers, chain saws, and other grounds maintenance equipment/tools • Keeps school and/or other District grounds clean; sweeps sidewalks, and picks up paper, rubbish, and other debris, and operates blowers • Hoes and rakes weeds, leaves, and grass clippings • Cleans and clears debris from gutters and drains • Maintains hoses, supplies, and tools in proper condition and repair • Mows, drags, chalks, burns, lines, marks, and sets up athletic fields for scheduled events • Performs minor service and repair work on grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, edgers, sprayers, backpack blowers • Applies pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposes as assigned • Maintains work records and logs related to assigned functions • Empties and maintains exterior trash receptacles • Maintains logs for maintenance equipment upkeep • May perform school custodial work as assigned • May pick up and deliver school supplies as assigned • Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License, which may include a Class II licenses • Knowledge of general grounds keeping and gardening methods and practices • Knowledge of the safe use, maintenance, and operation of grounds keeping tools and heavy or specialized power equipment • General knowledge of irrigation systems • Knowledge of the care, use, and application of pesticides and herbicides for pest/weed control purposes • Ability to effectively and safely use hand and power tools associated with grounds keeping and gardening work • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to sprinkling systems • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair work on a variety of small grounds keeping equipment, small engines, and tools • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions • Ability to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform required duties • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and landscaping plans • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
