Job Posting Supplemental Information SUBSTITUTE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS Special Education & Educational Opportunities There is a CONTINUING NEED for qualified individuals to work in educational programs offered by the Contra Costa County Office of Education as substitute instructional assistants when regular classified staff is absent. The educational programs provided by the Contra Costa County Office of Education primarily serve the needs of Severely, Multiply, and Emotionally Handicapped students. There is also a need for substitute teachers in our Educational Opportunities Programs. THE POSITION Substitute Instructional Assistants must be capable of assisting the teacher with the preparation of lesson plans and assisting the students with daily self-help skills. Schools for students with special education needs offer a comprehensive learning environment while assisting the Severely Handicapped and Severely Multiply Handicapped students with daily self help skills and vocational skills where appropriate. The Counseling and Education Program (C.E.P.), serving seriously Emotionally Disturbed students, stresses a highly structured behavior management system while emphasizing daily academic instruction. The C.E.P. also offers counseling services for every student as well as a Physical Education program. The Contra Costa County Office of Education Educational Opportunities program operates the educational programs at Juvenile Hall, the Summit Center and the Chris Adams Center in Martinez, and the Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Center in Byron. Golden Gate Community School is an Educational Opportunities program with classrooms throughout Contra Costa County serving the educational needs of students who have been referred to the program. Individuals working in schools for Severely Handicapped students must have the ability to lift students ranging in weight from infants to young adults; and demonstrate a willingness to assist Severely Multiply Handicapped students with self-help skills as necessary. QUALIFICATIONS * A high school diploma or equivalent is required. (Please submit copy) * A written proficiency test is required for applicants who do not meet one of the following requirements: 1. Verification of 48 semester units post high school, OR 2. Possession of an A.A. degree or higher. * Valid California driver’s license is required. * Employment is contingent upon satisfactory Physical Strength Testing results. * Provisions of the Education Code require new employees to present evidence of freedom from tuberculosis. (Tests must have been conducted within 60 days prior to employment.) * CCCOE will also obtain verification of employment from former employers. WORK SCHEDULE Substitute positions have flexible work days, approximately 6 to 6.5 hours per day (some classes are 5 hours per day). WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work as assigned by the position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Lifting and carrying students as assigned by the position. Pushing children in wheelchairs as assigned by the position. HAZARDS: Cleaning chemicals. Bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids.
