SAN JACINTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to perform a variety of instructional and clerical duties designed to free the instructor from non-teaching tasks related to the program. Positions in this class are established principally to assist teachers with instructional tasks and to relieve them of clerical duties which are non-instructional in nature. Persons in these positions will carry out their duties with minimum direction. They will be expected to make independent judgments in seeing tasks through to completion. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Listen to and drill students in reading, spelling, mathematics and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from an instructor. • Assign, review, and maintain records of progress on programmed learning materials. • Discuss any program changes with instructor. • Perform a variety of routine clerical and record keeping activities such as taking roll, collecting monies, filling out forms and applications, and correcting papers. • Assist with activities of students on the playground or in the cafeteria and assist instructor in maintaining order. • Collect, assemble, file and distribute resource materials. • Prepare teaching aids as directed. • Set up and arrange supplies and equipment in classroom for student use. • Prepare labels, charts, bulletin boards, and displays as instructed. • Decorate classrooms. • Administer make up tests. • Operate various office equipment such as a mimeograph machine and audio visual equipment. • Observe and record children’s behavior and other program data. • May accompany students to the bus. • May supervise students during the lunch period and recesses, on the lunch benches and on the school grounds. • Report special behavior problems. • Monitor student behavior in restrooms and other campus areas. • Encourage and promote courtesy among students. • Perform related duties as required. If assigned to a specific state or federal project, instructional aide assists project participants in specific areas needing remediation. • Assist in maintaining student profiles, providing diagnostic, prescriptive and monitoring services to project participants. • Assist in the preparation of appropriate instructional materials. • Administer and score tests required for project evaluation. • Collect and maintain project records. • Participate in staff meetings and in-service programs as required by project. • Perform other tasks as required within the project’s scope. QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE OF: • The general needs and behavior of students. • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and arithmetic. • Standard office equipment operation. • Basic safety rules and habits. • Basic principles of first aid. • Dominant language of students being served. ABILITY TO: • Establish and maintain effective relationships with adults and children. • Perform routine clerical work. • Make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy. • Understand and follow oral and written directions. • Work with individual and small groups of students. • Maintain acceptable standards of behavior among students. EDUCATION: AA degree or two years college required (48 semester units). EXPERIENCE: None required LICENSE: If driving a vehicle is required in the course of work, operator must possess a valid California driver’s license. WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment: constant interruptions Outdoor environment: drive a personal vehicle to conduct work, visit school sites, travel to other organizations and companies; meetings and workshops. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: • Hearing and speaking to conduct group training, exchange information in person, electronically and on the telephone. • Ability to read printed material and computer screens. • Ability to understand speech at normal levels. • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. • Kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies. • Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds. • Ability to climb stairs, walk and sit for extended periods of time. • Ability to climb a ladder for purposes of inspection when necessary.
