JOB TITLE: Substitute Bus Driver
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Transportation Director, safely drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to public transportation; supervise the transportation of pupils and the maintenance of automotive equipment for the school district; and to do related work as required
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Requires unrestricted California School Bus Certificate and a California Commercial Drivers license with passenger and air brake endorsement and ongoing California Highway Patrol Certification. Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations of the State Board of Education governing the transportation of pupils;
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive school bus, picking up and discharging students at established bus stops; Maintains bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections, including cleaning windows, mirrors and bus interior; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels; check brakes, brake lights and doors.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable safety procedures and emergency equipment in the event of an illness, accident or breakdown; conduct routine bus evacuations as required.
- Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported and other related matters; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports.
- Assists teachers and administration in the direct supervision of students during a variety of assigned campus events and in designated areas to ensure compliance with school policies and procedures relating to student behavior code.
- Complies with applicable state, local, and federal rules, regulations, and laws, as well as District policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, teachers, parents, representatives of protective service agencies, administration, coworkers, and general public.
- Demonstrates and models safe, prudent, and healthful work behaviors and practices; identifies and works toward elimination of unsafe or unhealthful work area conditions.
- Conducts vehicle inspection for parking permits; monitors related compliance with rules, regulations, and policies.
- Performs other essential job-related work as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS-QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience required: Two years of experience preferred. Good driving record. If certificate not in place, a willingness to obtain a school bus driving certificate.

Skills: Combination of training education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; written and oral communications, including listening; interpersonal relations; public relations; conflict management and resolution; problem solving; understanding and applying school and District policies and procedures in supervising
Knowledge: Safe driving practices, safety procedures and practices used in all areas of maintenance work; provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; methods, practices and terminology used in instructional situations; principles of supervision; conflict management and resolution.
Ability to: Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus; maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition; recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action; learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards; maintain routine records; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; observe legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate in a clear concise manner; work in a cooperative and collaborative manner; supervise students in an effective and cooperative manner; demonstrate good judgment and integrity; exercise good moral and educational influence on students; respond effectively to needs of diverse student population; work varied shifts; use computer system.
- Education Required: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.
- Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate, Class A or B driver’s license with passenger endorsement, valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate;
- Working Conditions: School bus environment, driving in various road and weather conditions, noise. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Sitting for extended periods of time when operating a transportation vehicle. Walking and stepping up/down, or standing for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, hearing and speaking to exchange information. Hazards include traffic hazards when stopping traffic and escorting students across streets, as well as the use of hazardous cleaning materials. May be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain. May be required to work with harsh or toxic substances.
