ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NURSING – VOCATIONAL NURSING (VN) PROGRAM
HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER AT OTAY MESA
10-MONTH, TEMPORARY, NON-TENURE TRACK POSITION

TEMPORARY FOR 2012-13 ACADEMIC YEAR ONLY
LOCATION: 8100 GIGANTIC STREET, SAN DIEGO, CA 92154
This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, extension site, and online or hybrid assignments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing and Health Occupations Programs, assume a teaching assignment in the VN Program, including both classroom instruction and supervision of clinical laboratory and other related classes, as necessary. Teaching responsibilities may also include the ADN Program and the CNA Program.

In addition to instruction, general responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• teaching all classes as assigned or scheduled and maintaining contractually-defined office hours that are supportive of students
• appropriate class preparation in support of all course objectives including updating of class work and tests to reflect community practice
• impartial assessment and evaluation of students
• adequate tracking and record keeping of student performance and outcomes
• participation in meetings pertinent to faculty professional responsibilities, including standing and ad hoc committees
• consistent involvement in professional development and/or extracurricular activities
• involvement in the shared governance process
• participation in strategic planning and program review
• knowledge and practice of pedagogy and andragogy that supports a variety of learning styles and includes a wide range of instructional delivery systems
• demonstrates commitment to collegiality and professionalism by working as a team with discipline faculty members in the planning of class schedules, teaching rotations of discipline courses, and support for department and school activities
• maintains currency and clinical competence in the all subject areas taught
• adherence to all District policies and procedures
Faculty are expected to play a proactive role in the updating and revision of their discipline-specific courses and development of new curriculum, as well as student recruitment, advising and retention. This includes the appropriate merging of technology and student outcomes into the curriculum, as well as effective applications and utilization of instructional technology. Active involvement in student recruitment, advising and retention is also expected.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in Nursing OR
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing AND Master’s in Health Education or Health Science OR
• the equivalent OR
• the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), whichever is higher
AND
BOARD OF VOCATIONAL NURSING AND PSYCHIATRIC NURSING:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college which shall include courses in nursing, or in natural, behavioral or social sciences relevant to nursing practice AND
At least one year's continuous, full-time experience in direct patient care practice as a registered nurse.

for Southwestern College is desirable.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters in Nursing. Background in Acute Care and/or Longterm Clinical Nursing. A course in teaching and curriculum development is required by the BVNPT. Desire to remain current and clinically competent in nursing skills through occasional hospital or clinic work.
A short teaching demonstration may be required of those invited for an interview.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule
based on years of experience and education. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 6. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
