PRIMARY FUNCTION: Assist with public security and public services as needed; perform a variety of duties relative to the Palomar College Police Department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under direction from the Police Sergeant and in support of the Police Department Records Specialist, assist with public services including providing protection to District buildings and property and guarding against fire, intrusion, theft and vandalism. Provide information to the public. Make written and oral reports of any hazardous condition impacting the College and its community. Patrol by foot, bicycle, motorized cart or vehicle. Write crime and incident reports. Observe and report unsafe conditions and/or occurrences. Assist victims of injuries or crimes. Secure doors, windows, and/or gates to District buildings. Complete Daily Field Activities Reports. Provide traffic control and direction as needed. Enforce parking regulations. Take custody of found, lost or abandoned property. Act as a witness for sworn law enforcement officers when observing crimes. Receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone and radio calls, dispatch required equipment and personnel. Operate teletype and video terminals for automated information retrieval. Inventory and check out equipment and keys, and monitor multiple radio systems. Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Requires sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must satisfactorily pass a physical examination and a background investigation. Possession of a current, valid California Driver’s License required by time of appointment; possession of or willingness to obtain a valid CPR and First Aid certification and/or EMT certification.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Normal work schedule: The Police Department provides 24-hour/day, 7 day/week services; therefore, employees are subject to shift work, including weekends, nights, and holidays. A 3% night differential will be paid for hours worked between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm. A 6% night differential will be paid for hours worked between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. This position is specially-funded and its continuation is dependent upon availability and/or continuation of funds.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: The starting salary is $2,736.37 per month. Initial salary placement for all new classified unit employees is at step 1 of the corresponding salary grade on the Classified Salary Schedule. Full-time employees receive fully-paid benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents; life, disability, and long-term care insurance; and sick leave, vacation and paid holidays. Estimated value of these employer-paid benefits is approximately $23,320 annually. All full-time classified employees are enrolled in PERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
