Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

Assist in the preparation and organization of laboratory activities in our large science department. Applicants must have laboratory experience, be at least 18 years of age, and provide two letters of recommendation, one from a college professor or other highly qualified science professional and a second recommendation as a personal reference.

Qualified candidates will have completed a quantitative chemistry course, have experience in standard laboratory practice, solution preparation, and safety procedures, be familiar with standard biology and chemistry laoratory equipment, reagents and materials and possess strong organizational, communication and computer skills

AND

be able to work independently AND SAFELY by observing proper disposal and handling of all chemicals appropriately and trained in the use of safety equipment  and materials (e.g. eye wash, goggles, fume hood, neutralization/acid-base clean-up and handling of concentrated acids and bases, proper storage and containment issues, etc.)

 

Job Responsibilities:  

  • Preparation of stock solutions and lab reagents for AP Biology, AP Chemistry or AP Environmental
  • Preparation of stock solutions or reagents needed in science classes as requested such as:
    • Preparation of varying molar concentrations of sugars for photosynthesis labs, dilution and/or preparation of buffers, preparation of Indicators (DPIP type indicators must be freshly prepared from powder; solution quickly degrades).
    • Preparation of aliquots of markers and enzymes in DNA labs, aliquots of ethanol for strawberry DNA extraction, etc.
    • Agarose Gels and Petri Dish preparation (does not include clean-up, disposal, etc. as growth of dangerous/pathogenic bacteria and fungi are possible in these experiments.
    • Access to and maintenance of the chemical reagent database (chemical inventory) to insure that appropriate chemical reagents are in stock for the Labs and lab preparations requested.  
    • Preparation of purchase requests for needed chemicals and reagents specific to the laboratory preparations requested.  
    • Recording of all incoming chemical reagents on the chemical inventory database and maintenance of MSDS forms received with shipments for inclusion in the MSDS notebooks per chemical safety requirements. 
    • Clean-up of all preparations done at request and appropriate safety labeling of ALL solutions and materials as required by chemical safety rules and regulations.  
    • Small tasks as requested: Inventory check of chemicals in biology and chemistry stockroom.
    • Cutting/measuring filter paper for chromatography, etc. Refills on DI-water, etc. 

This is a part-time position, up to 19 hours per week, with an open flexible schedule between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM and is an ideal position for a college student who is a biology or chemistry major or a potential high school science teacher.
