The Institution:

The Los Rios Community College District, with its four colleges, American River College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, Sacramento City College, and numerous outreach locations, is a multicampus public college district serving the greater Sacramento region. The area population exceeds one million. 

 

Statistics show that the Los Rios District is one of the top districts statewide in transferring students to the University of California and the California State University Systems. In addition, the district provides 76 two-year vocational programs and 63 technical certificate programs.

Position Summary:

The Los Rios Community College District is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary, part-time laboratory assignments in the Healthcare Interpreting program. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitments. Assignments may include day, evening and weekend courses.

Additional Position Summary:

About the Program 

The Healthcare Interpreter certificate program is designed to

prepare bilingual individuals for effective language interpretation and cultural brokering in the healthcare setting. It emphasizes roles and responsibilities of the healthcare interpreter; the development of cultural competence in the community and workplace; insight into language and cultural nuances for specific communities; standards and legal requirements for culturally and linguistically appropriate services; ethical decision-making, advocacy and power dynamics in healthcare settings; and career preparation to become an integral member of the health care team. Coursework covers modes and models of interpretation; development of the technical aspects of interpretation; techniques for facilitating and managing the flow of communication; medical terminology and related vocabulary development in language of service; and common medical conditions and associated treatments/procedures in both basic and specialized health care service areas. Language coaches are provided to facilitate skills acquisition, and precepted fieldwork experiences are required.

 

Requirements for Certificate (22.5-28.5 Units)

 

Pre-HCI Semester: 

HCI 300 Introduction to Healthcare Interpreting 

1st Semester: 

AH 110 Medical Language for Health-Care Providers[ BIOL 102 Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology or [ BIOL 115 Basic Anatomy and Physiology and BIOL 116 Basic Anatomy and Physiology ]

or [ BIOL 430 Anatomy and Physiology and BIOL 431 Anatomy and Physiology ]

HCI 310 Healthcare Interpreting I 2nd Semester:

HCI 320 Healthcare Interpreting II HCI 330 Healthcare Interpreting III 

3rd Semester:

HCI 340 Healthcare Interpreting IV 

HCI 350 Healthcare Interpreting Fieldwork

 

 

Responsibilities:

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; maintaining thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Have a bachelor's degree and two years of experience directly related to the discipline; OR have an associate's degree and six years of experience directly related to the discipline; OR the equivalent* OR hold a California Community College Instructor's Credential in the discipline area. 

 

* Note: Applicants applying under the "equivalent" provision must attach details and explain how their academic preparation is equivalent of the degree listed above. 

 

Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. 

 

(Degrees and applicable college coursework must be from an accredited institution.)

Conditions:

Job Offer Requirements: Offers of employment are contingent upon successful clearance from a criminal background check, freedom from tuberculosis, and proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States prior to the first day of work. For permanent and adjunct faculty positions, when education is a requirement for the position, official academic transcripts from the accredited college/university must be submitted within 60 days of hire.

 

 

 

The District may select additional qualified candidates should unexpected vacancies or needs occur during this recruitment/selection process.

 

 

 

Administrative positions may be subject to the District's Conflict of Interest Code, and a financial disclosure statement is required within thirty (30) days following appointment to the position.

 

 

 

Contingent on funding and eligibility, successful candidates selected for an interview may be eligible to apply for partial reimbursement of travel expenses.
