Under close supervision, establish and conduct academic programming for all residents, including individual and group training.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Although it is impossible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties,
responsibilities and performance standards, the following are the essential job
functions:
1. Supervise, train, and evaluate the inmate education tutor/facilitators, as they learn the essentials of small group and peer tutoring in the assigned curriculum areas of Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, G.E.D. preparation, and train on the use of the PLATO literacy library.
2. Write lesson plans to prepare for classes by researching, summarizing and sequencing the material to be presented.
3. Instruct inmates in acceptable social, work, and interpersonal behaviors to facilitate their ability to be successful in a classroom environment.
4. Evaluate student progress and provide appropriate counseling.
5. Maintains discipline in the classroom and intervene during disruptive behavior.
6. Administer interest inventories, standardized reading tests, standardized work tasks and academic achievement tests to inmates.
7. Writes progress notes, periodic reviews of individual cases, and other reports in approved formats.
8. Order, maintain, and distribute supplies needed for the operation of educational programs and classrooms.
9. Meet on a regular basis with the Programs Administrator to evaluate current programs, discuss student concerns, plan, and resolve program and/or staff concerns.
10. May perform job duties of the Programs Administrator in his/her absence. (See Job Description Manual).
11. Perform clerical duties, such as answering telephones, sending and receiving faxes, using the copy machine, filing, routing charts, etc.
12. Complete in-service training to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self development. (Full-time employees 40 hours per year and proportionate hours for all other classifications of employees.)
13. Maintain confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding inmates, employees, vendors, outside agencies, etc., so that sensitive information is only given on a need to know basis.
14. Comply with Cornell Corrections work rules and policies as explained in the company Employee Handbook, State of California Title 15, and the Facility Policies and Procedures Manual; and respond positively to directives from managers and supervisors in a cooperative spirit to ensure conformance to standards.
15. Adhere to Cornell Corrections attendance policy; work overtime as required, to ensure adequate coverage of the program and to ensure the safety and security of the residents.
16. Comply with the Facility safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others.
17. Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation.
EDUCATION:
A California teaching credential is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of structured classroom instruction is preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Ability to make oral presentations in a classroom setting, to interact with staff in a manner that establishes and maintains effective work relationships, to lead group discussions for instructional purposes, and to evaluate academic progress of inmates. Display high standards of ethical conduct, exhibits honesty and integrity.
PHYSICAL LIMITATION:
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting (25 lbs maximum);
Occasionally walk on uneven ground; gross and fine manual dexterity; must be
able to visually observe residents; detect odors through sense of smell for such
things as marijuana and alcohol; hear, understand, and interpret resident behavior;
communicate verbally and in writing. Inmate population may become unruly at
times, requiring quick reflexive responses.
WORK ENVIROMENT:
Minimum security risk prison setting. Possible exposure to communicable
diseases. Office areas are well illuminated and relatively quite. Outside
temperatures can reach well into the 100’s during the summer season, while winter
temperatures are often at or below freezing. High winds can blow dirt and dust
around. Gopher holes, sidewalks/street curbs and rocks are prevalent.
