The Compton Community College District (CCCD) was established in 1927 as a component of the Compton Union High School District. In 1950, voters approved a bond issue separating the college from the high school district. Construction of the new college campus was completed on the present site. Classes began on the new campus in fall 1956. The Compton Community College District encompasses an area of about 29 square miles, making educational services available to nearly 300,000 residents of Compton, Lynwood, Paramount and Willowbrook, as well as portions of Athens, Bellflower, Carson, Downey, Dominguez, Lakewood, Long Beach and South Gate. Today, about 290 full and part-time faculty teach more than 40 degree programs and 30 certificate programs.

The Compton Community College District Upward Bound (CCCDUB) and Upward Bound Math Science (CCCDUBMS) Programs are looking for qualified tutors interested in providing after-school tutorial services to high school students in the Compton, Long Beach, Lynwood and Paramount areas. The CCCDUB and CCCDUBMS are federally funded by the Department of Education to provide services to transition disadvantaged students from high school to a college/university. Tutors will be responsible for providing academic assistance in a variety of high school subjects. Tutoring will take place Monday through Thursday after-school at our target high schools. Tutors play an essential role in creating a positive environment for learning, and act as role models and mentors.
Qualifications
• Must be a current, full time student in good academic standing that is able to show proof of their current enrollment status.
• Ability to tutor in high school English, Math (Algebra I- Pre Calculus), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science), History, and Foreign Language (Spanish, French). Preference will be given to tutors who can tutor in multiple subjects.
• Tutoring experience with high school students preferred (preference given to those with experience in federal programs, such as MESA, AVID, Upward Bound).
• Reliable transportation to and from high school sites.

• Provide program participants with learning and academic tools that will enable them to experience greater academic success.
• Can exercise maturity and professionalism at all times. Willing to act as role model/mentor to students.
• Ability to supervise program participants.
• Must use independent judgment under supervision.
