Position Title:
SKILLED CRAFTSPERSON - HVAC

Classification:
Regular Classified Service (Probationary)
Full-Time, 40 hours/week, 12 Months per Year
Contingent upon the availability of state funding.
Start date will be August 1, 2010

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an assigned administrator or supervisor, performs complex skilled and semi-skilled duties requiring significant knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the inspection, maintenance and repair of campus buildings and facilities. May perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION DUTIES:
1. Maintains and repairs rooftop DX heating and cooling units.
2. Maintains and repairs boilers and chillers, hydronic systems.
3. Maintains and repairs small refrigeration systems/ice machines.
4. Maintains, repairs and programs campus energy management system.
5. Installs and repairs air distribution systems.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
*1. Installs, maintains, diagnoses, rebuilds, adjusts and/or repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for the District.
*2. Inspects refrigeration equipment to insure satisfactory operation; performs maintenance and repair work on such equipment as necessary.
*3. Checks refrigeration systems for proper operation of valves, time clocks, defrost clocks and motors and makes repairs as necessary.
*4. Cleans and replaces filters, defrost coils; orders and replaces faulty parts.
*5. Inspects and repairs exhaust fans, cafeteria equipment, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers as necessary.
*6. Checks thermostats and adjusts as necessary.
*7. Programs and maintains campus energy management system.
*8. Performs preventative maintenance and energy conservation utilizing journey-level HVAC practices.
*9. Interprets HVAC plans and specifications; checks for conformity with codes, regulations and safety orders.
*10. Repairs duct work, including routing from main source and running through subflooring, interior walls, exterior walls and ceilings as necessary.
*11. Works from plans, sketches, blueprints, or other instructions.
*12. Assists with new HVAC systems and installations and prepares estimates of time and material required for repair.
13. Inspects work completed by contractors; keeps records and prepared reports for work done and material used.
14. Services and otherwise maintains the working order of shop and equipment.
15. May serve on a variety of committees as requested.
16. May perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. or equivalent* AND directly related work experience in HVAC installation, maintenance and repair work.

*High School or GED equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of increasingly responsible work experience.

Certificates, Licenses, and Other Requirements:
Valid EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification, or EPA 608 Type I, II, and III Certifications AND a valid California Driver’s License to be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience and/or training, which have influenced or prepared you to work cooperatively with and support individuals from diverse backgrounds. For example: involvement within specific programs; courses; directed study; or participation in groups and organizations, etc. that cultivate diversity.
2. Completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program.
3. An Associate’s degree in construction, building technology and maintenance practices, or related field.
4. Education and/or training in commercial refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, boilers, electrical and controls supplemented by four (4) years experience in commercial refrigeration.
5. Work experience at journey level.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the policies, procedures, rules and regulations affecting department activities; the materials, tools, equipment and practices used in HVAC installation and repair; applicable safety methods associated with department equipment and activities. Ability to: use, operate, maintain and repair tools and equipment; work from plans and specifications; follow safety rules and regulations; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance.

PHYSICAL EFFORT / WORK CONDITIONS:
Regular, and at times sustained exertion of heavy physical effort such as bending, stooping, crawling, crouching, pushing, pulling, working in confined spaces, lifting and carrying moderately heavy items (20-50 pounds) and occasionally very heavy items (100 pounds or more); the operation of vehicles, shop equipment and hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand/eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.
Exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, noise from equipment and machinery, strong and/or toxic fumes and chemicals, high pressure gases and liquids, dusts, machinery hazards, electrical currents, working in confined spaces or overhead for extended periods of time.

DISTRICT DRIVING POLICY:
Employees driving on District business or driving a District vehicle must possess a valid California driver’s license.

SALARY / BENEFITS:
Range 34, Step A, $3,925 per month. The District offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and family members. The package includes: Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program. Additional benefits include Income Protection, participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and 403b tax shelter retirement plan.

The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee’s responsibility. If you should be offered this position you will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged by the DOJ from your first paycheck.
