General Background San Diego Unified School District is expanding its Mandarin Chinese World Language program to include grades K – 5. We are recruiting a full-time Mandarin teacher to begin in August, 2013. The successful candidate will teach Mandarin Chinese. Job Profile Applicants must be fluent (native or near native proficiency) in Mandarin Chinese; skilled at reading and writing in simplified Chinese form; have a BA degree; Advanced degree in education and teaching experience in grades K – 6 preferred. We are seeking energetic, enthusiastic, creative individuals who will communicate well with parents, staff and teachers in the school. Applicants must be committed to building and promoting the school’s Mandarin Chinese World Language program. Academic Qualifications A current California Teaching Credential: Single Subject in Mandarin with CLAD (authorization to teach English Learners) OR, Multiple Subjects with supplemental in Mandarin and CLAD OR, out-of-state equivalent OR, active enrollment in a university intern program (minimum G.P.A. of 2.5) Please note: The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires all public school districts to hire “highly qualified” teachers. • Experience teaching Mandarin Chinese as a World Language.
• Experience in teaching both reading and writing Mandarin using Simplified Chinese.
• Expertise of Chinese customs and culture.
• Experience working with youth in education, summer programs, travel, etc.
• Commitment to student-centered, multicultural education.
• Demonstrate adaptability, initiative, responsibility, and ability to work collaboratively.
• Demonstrate ability to build a supportive and positive learning environment.
• Ability to plan and implement creative, challenging, hands-on and engaging lessons.
• Knowledge of differentiation and engagement strategies that support a communicative approach to world language teaching.
• Knowledge of effective techniques for classroom management.
• Knowledge of evaluation and assessment of student progress.
• Knowledge of effective use of technology in the classroom.
• Knowledge of current teaching methodologies, strategies and research, which support implementation of district-approved World Language courses.
• Knowledge of the pedagogy for teaching Mandarin to non-native as well as native Mandarin-speaking students.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development.
