Yosemite Community College District Modesto Junior College Instructor of English Literature & Language Arts 2009-2010 Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in English, literature, comparative literature or composition OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s Degree in linguistics, TESL, Speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism OR a California Community College Instructor credential appropriate to the subject OR the equivalent. The District has adopted equivalency procedures which enables applications by individuals not possessing qualifications listed above. Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic back-grounds of community college students. Sensitivity to the needs, problems and challenges associated with the diversity of the community college student population. Salary Range: Placement on the Yosemite Community College District salary schedule dependent upon education and experience. 2007-2008 Salary Schedule - $47,035.00 to $94,382.00 plus $2,195 annual stipend for an earned doctorate. New personnel limited to a maximum tenth step initial placement based on previous experience – maximum equals $74,748.00. Job Duties and Responsibilities: • Teach lower division college courses in composition and literature, including courses in developmental writing, as assigned. • Encourage success in students who form a non-traditional, ethnically diverse college population. • Maintain an appropriate number of office hours per week to meet with students. • Attend division and general college meetings, as well as participate in various division, college and district committees. • Perform other duties as assigned. Desirable Qualifications: • Education and/or experience in teaching composition and literature at all community college levels, particularly in basic skills. • Current knowledge of issues and concerns under discussion in the profession, such as composition theory, developmental writing theory, reading theory, and second-language acquisition. • Interest in new pedagogies, such as service learning, learning communities, on-line courses, or other forms of distance education. Interview Process: Candidates invited for interview will be asked to 1. Present a brief sample teaching demonstration. 2. Discuss specific topics related to the teaching of writing and literature with the selection committee. 3. Grade a writing sample. Applications will be reviewed by a screening committee, which will select candidates to be interviewed. After interviews, a recommendation will be forwarded to the President, Chancellor, and Board of Trustees. Official offer of employment may be extended only by the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor, Human Resources. Federal law requires that the district employ only U.S. citizens and aliens authorized to work in the United States. Written verification of employment eligibility is required. A background investigation of new employees is required, including reference checks and a state criminal history report. The cost for the criminal history report will be the responsibility of the successful candidate.
