About Redwood Coast Montessori

Redwood Coast Montessori (RCM) is a TK-12 rural charter school located across two campuses in Humboldt County, California. RCM, the only public Montessori school in Humboldt County, is authorized by the Arcata School District. Redwood Coast Montessori began the fall of 2005 as a single Montessori classroom on a traditional public school campus. Beginning with this first classroom, the goal of RCM has always been to provide students with a world-class public Montessori education. With continued success, Redwood Coast Montessori has grown to serve more than 215 students, with a strong emphasis on both Montessori education and Project Based Learning. The elementary campus (TK-8) is situated in Manila, a small, unincorporated community (population <1,000) situated on a narrow strip of land between Humboldt Bay to the east and the coastal dunes and Pacific Ocean to the west. The high school campus (7-12) is located a few miles north of Manila in the City of Arcata with a population of approximately 20,000. Redwood Coast Montessori is committed to providing a Montessori and Project Based Learning environment where students are guided to become intrinsically motivated learners who understand and value their work and their role in the community. RCM achieves this vision through authentic, rigorous, and individualized instruction that supports students to pursue their passions, address real-world problems, and engage in work that matters. RCM students build their own educational path by developing a growth mindset and engaging in meaningful work that demonstrates persistence, creativity, and critical thought.
