CLOVIS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY

Performs a variety of instructional support and clerical assistance duties in an instructional laboratory at an elementary, intermediate, or high school.


NATURE AND SCOPE

Under general supervision of assigned supervisor, independently performs program support duties which are well defined by policy, procedure and mandated regulations. Focus is on the core subject areas. Work is normally routine and supervision is available for unusual situations or problems. Interacts with students, faculty, parents, specialists and other staff. In contrast with other Instructional Assistants, this position requires additional organizational and administrative skills.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Level II Instructional Assistant (Lab) has specialized skills and knowledge in the core subject areas. Advancement to a Level III or Level IV position will require broader or more in-depth knowledge, skills and training beyond the area of specialization or additional supervisory and administrative skills.


ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)

• Performs the essential instructional duties of an Instructional Assistant I in order to assist teaching staff with instruction of individual or small groups of students in a special lab setting or a specialized program. Focus of instruction is on laboratory related projects. Performs the following additional duties.

• Assists in the running and maintenance of an instructional laboratory. Assists teachers and students in the use of a variety of laboratory materials, equipment, or supplies.

• May identify students who require special tutoring in a particular area (Reading, Math ,etc.) and pull students from class to work with them. Administers tests, scores tests and reports or records results.





• Maintains instructional laboratory in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Maintains a variety of office and instructional equipment. May adjust and perform minor repairs to equipment.

• Prepares and issues material and equipment for student use. Assists students with set-up and use of laboratory equipment. Maintains records of materials and equipment used by students.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills: Incumbent must have the knowledge and skills sufficient to instruct students at the Instructional Assistant II level. Considerable knowledge is necessary in the specific laboratory area to which assigned. Thorough knowledge of the practices and principles of child guidance is required.

Abilities: Ability to set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a safe, clean and functional manner is required. Requires the ability to work independently to set up student projects which meet the instructional goals of the teacher.

Physical Abilities: Ability to lift weights up to 50 pounds may be required depending on the type of lab in which the incumbent is working. Works in a lab setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Science Lab incumbents may have exposure to chemicals, fumes and related toxic elements. May require arm, hand, finger dexterity to operate keyboard, typewriter or other office equipment. Requires good hearing and speaking ability to communicate with staff and children.

Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent plus additional training in education or related laboratory field is required. Two years experience working with students in a classroom or structured setting is required.
