DEFINITION OF POSITION The school nurse’s role is to promote and maintain the health of students so that each can achieve the maximum benefit from his/her education. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Respond to referrals with appropriate action, including classroom observation, parent conferencing, health screening, consultation, and referral to health and social agencies. - Identify students with health problems that may affect their school performance. - Conduct health appraisal including the screening of vision and hearing status. - Follow up on health problems with appropriate communication with the student’s parents, teacher, principal, and when required with physicians, health and social agencies, etc. - Serve as a contributing member of the Eligibility & Planning Team in the identification, evaluation, planning, and placement of students into special education programs. - Maintain a supply of approved first aid materials in each school. - Post approved emergency procedures for sudden illnesses and accidents at each school. - Maintain a record of immunization status for each student. - Recommend to the principal the exclusion and readmittance of students with communicable diseases in accordance with state regulations. Communicate with parents as appropriate. - Consult with parents to assist them in understanding and meeting the health needs of their children. - Consult with the principal concerning safety and health factors in the school environment. - Serve as a resource person to teachers and principals by suggesting health education materials for classroom instruction. - Help with certain facets of health instruction such as first aid, dental health, etc. - Other duties assigned by the administrator.
