LVN/HEALTH Technician Pay Level 36 on Confidential Salary Schedule Job Description Update approved: October 15, 2007 DEFINITION Under direction from the Director of Pupil Services, performing medical and health care duties prescribed by a physician as appropriate for maintaining student health and safety during the school day and other related work as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements. • Respond in emergency situations for Special Education and Regular Education at various sites. Emergency situations would include anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, dysreflexia, insulin shock, and other medical emergencies. • Prepare student emergency information packet to assist in student transportation to a medical facility. • Deliver Specialized Health Care Services to students as directed by the Physician’s order and the Individualized School Health Care Plan. (i.e. Performing intermittent clean cauterization and assist student in self-clean catheterization; Tracheotomy suctioning, Mechanical Ventilators, ostomy care, drainage and percussions; Administer tube feedings; Blood Glucose monitoring.) • Monitor all supplies to ensure personnel can adequately meet student needs. • Feed students who need special assistance. • Provide first aid to students and staff as needed and travel to various school sites within the District to provide a wide variety of nursing duties and first aid; assess illnesses and injuries; assess and assist students with seizures; check for head lice, skin abnormalities and other conditions; obtain vital signs. • Perform duties related to student hygiene. • Administer medications per Physician’s orders and notify the District Nurse and Director of Pupil Services regarding any medication errors. • Communicate with parent, school personnel and outside organizations to exchange information, refer students, report suspected child abuse, coordinate activities and resolve other health-related issues and concerns. • Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. • Perform health screenings under the direct supervision of the District Nurse. • Attend a variety of meetings to maintain current knowledge of rules and regulations and technological advancements in the field of school health practices. • Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Health care practices and procedures related to physically handicapped individuals; Computers and ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs to develop and produce correspondence and reports; Equipment such as: communication devices, lifts, standing frames and other standard health care equipment; Public health agencies and local health care resources; Health and safety regulations; Record-keeping techniques. Ability to: Establish and maintain effective communication; Establish and maintain working relationships with staff/students and parents/caregivers; Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; Act effectively and appropriately in emergency situations; Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action; Lift 40 pounds; Perform and prioritize multiple functions or tasks; Adequately observe and assess students; Travel to various school sites within the District and perform a wide variety of specialized health care duties; Record data and information; Establish files, records, reports and referrals; Read, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures, appropriately; Work independently with little direction, seeking consultation with District Nurse, Site Administrators as needed; Prioritize and schedule work; Maintain confidentiality of student medical records. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. • Persons performing service in this position classification shall have sufficient physical ability, strength, mobility and stamina to lift, carry, push or pull objects which may frequently exceed 50 pounds in a series of functional tests which clearly simulates the work environment. • Persons performing service in this position classification shall have sufficient physical ability, strength, mobility, and stamina to drive a vehicle, bend, stretch, stand, kneel, walk, and extend legs. • Persons performing service in this position classification shall have ability to reach horizontally and vertically with arms. Sufficient dexterity to manipulate small objects and print or write legibly. • Persons performing service in this position classification shall have physical ability to sit for extended periods of time. • Persons performing service in this position classification shall perceive the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job. Education: Minimum Requirement: Twelfth grade diploma or the equivalent. License(s)/Certificated(s)/Permits: Minimum Requirement: Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse(RN) Valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. Valid California Driver’s license; adequate insurance coverage on personal vehicle and ability to travel between school sites within the District. Condition of Employment: Insurability by the district’s liability carrier. Employment contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.
