PURPOSE STATEMENT

The job of Band Assistant was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional music program with specific responsibilities for providing instruction to students in music classes; conduct warm-up sessions and rehearsals; transpose and arrange music; and serving as an instructional resource for the band instructor. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, ) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules.

 

  • Assists the teacher for the purpose of in supervising students during choral rehearsals and

 

  • Assists the teacher in supervising student activities (e.g. individual student lessons and testing, section rehearsals, etc) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of class time and maintaining a positive learning

 

  • Exhibits professional and stage etiquette for the purpose of serving as a model of professionalism at musical

 

  • Provides a variety of routine record keeping and clerical activities (e.g. sorting music, recording attendance, collecting monies, correcting papers, inventorying musical instruments, etc.) for the purpose of providing administrative support to the

 

  • Rehearses with choral groups for the purpose of playing full and sectional

 

 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: transposing and arranging music; working with large groups of students; conducting musical scores and playing a variety of musical instruments.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent’s, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: music history, theory and appreciation; musical instruments played in a band or orchestra, conducting techniques; and symphonic literature and various music styles.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; hearing mistakes in music performances; copyright laws related to duplicating music, strong oral and written communication skills, working as part of a team operating office equipment and related software applications; and working flexible hours.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the organization's services.

 

 

 

Working Environment

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 45% sitting, 10% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
