Job Summary
Under the direction of the Chief of Facilities, Maintenance and Operations, performs general labor and serves in a learning or apprentice role for building maintenance, projects, and services. Assists skilled and licensed maintenance specialists in the performance of skilled maintenance work in the various construction and mechanical systems trades, and performs skilled assignments on an intermittent basis.
Requirements / Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: • Education: A High School diploma or equivalent. • Experience: Two (2) years of experience in custodial and/or general labor and construction services. Licenses and other Requirements: • Valid California Driver’s License. • May require First-Aid/ CPR Certification. Knowledge of: • Building, grounds or equipment maintenance, sufficient to perform routine maintenance and repair tasks. • Use, maintenance and minor repair of the various tools and equipment used in building maintenance, remodel, and repair work. • Materials and methods sufficient to assist others in one or more of the following areas: rough and finish carpentry techniques, commercial painting, window glazing and framing, electrical, and plumbing. • Building quality standards. • Safety rules and regulations. • Arithmetic skills to compute distances and measures. • Writing skills to document work orders. • Human relations skill to work as a cooperative member of a team and to serve internal customers. Ability to: • Learn and perform the essential functions of the position. • Work as a member of a crew and maintain harmonious work relationships. • Perform general labor and support to semi-to-skilled level trades and to complete routine maintenance assignments. • Learn welding techniques to repair non-load bearing connections. • Read, understand, and interpret work schedules and drawings. • Understand written and oral instructions. • Make straightforward arithmetic calculations for distance, angle, and quantity. • Work variable schedules to facilitate efficient project completion and special events. • Observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures. • Maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Environment: • Indoor/Outdoor Environment in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to heavy weight materials. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Requires the ability to perform work of an active nature; to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) heavy weights of up to 75 pounds on a regular basis. • Requires the ability to push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds. • Requires the ability to climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis. • Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information. • Requires auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms. • Requires near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, moving objects, and observe work-in-progress. • Requires speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations. • Requires the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions. Hazards: • Exposure to chemicals and herbicides. • Machinery having moving parts. • Work from heights.
