MOUNTAIN VIEW-LOS ALTOS UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 1299 BRYANT AVENUE MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA 94040 CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT - CHILD CARE BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Child Development Center (CDC) Coordinator and teaching staff, provide quality child care and a safe and loving environment for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in the Child Development Center (CDC); implement variety of activities to meet the needs and interests of the children; participate in activities with assigned group of children; assist in providing proper role modeling and positive parenting skills to parents, children and families. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Provide direct care for children assigned to the Child Development Center (CDC) and serve as a positive role model to children, parents and families. Engage with child/parent in play, learning and enrichment activities. Collaborate with CDC staff in implementing curriculum and assessing children’s learning gains while maintaining logs and records on each child to assure quality care and benchmark gains. Document and report any sign of illness, accident or unusual occurrences to CDC supervisor. Provide specialized attention to each child/parent, responding to needs and characteristics of each individual: feeding, changing, and/or routines. Provide a positive role model exemplifying a strong work ethic and a dedication to the concept of life-long learning. Provide learning examples as needed. Provide emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance to children and parents. Provide stimulating environment and learning situations to enhance the child’s growth and development. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: District policies, laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to designated program areas Correct usage of English, i.e. proper use of grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary Knowledge of Spanish language oral and written – is desirable Strong interpersonal skills, i.e. patience, respect, tolerance, tact, courtesy, conflict management, and communication Early childhood education, parenting education, adult education and/or literacy development Health and safety regulations Record keeping and organizational skills ABILITY TO: Maintain confidentiality of pupil and school information Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents and staff Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others including community agencies and other service providers Operate instructional and office equipment, including use of computers Remain calm and deal with crisis situations appropriately Be flexible and work with diverse ethnic, racial, linguistic, age and educational needs groups Understand and carry out oral and written instructions Show initiative and use of good judgment EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED certificate; 12 college level units in Early Childhood Education course work; a desire to work with babies, toddlers and/or preschoolers. Prior experience in early childhood education, parenting education, and adult education and/or literacy development related field desirable. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: • Child Development Center environment; possible exposure to childhood communicable diseases • Lifting and carrying children and objects up to 40 pounds, standing for extended periods of time; ability to communicate in English with children and parents; good vision for observing children; good hearing for working with children and parents; dexterity of hands and fingers to hold and care for children and to manipulate objects used in play and learning activities; kneeling, bending, crawling and reaching for objects and children; and mobility for following and supervising children. Licenses and other requirements: • Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance • Evidence of TB clearance If required to operate a vehicle: • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License • Acceptable driving record and qualification for insurability by the District’s insurance carrier
