POSITION TITLE: CUSTODIAN/UTILITY WORKER
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are characterized by having as their primary assignment cleaning and plant maintenance functions under the specific direction of the supervisor assigned. Position requires familiarity with gardening and agricultural principles as well as the ability to operate responsibly equipment and vehicles associated with this trade. The custodial positions may have more than one supervisor depending upon the shift assigned or the time of year. Positions within this class have specific routines which must be followed in addition to having other tasks to perform which may vary from day to day or seasonally. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the degree of primarily custodial duties which are required in relation to other associated duties such as driver, warehouse worker. Shift differentials are typically available for night work.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to perform custodial services, routine gardening, food services and a variety of semi-skilled activities related to the maintenance and upkeep of buildings and facilities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Plant, propagate, and care for trees, shrubs, flowers and ground cover
- Sweep, mop, wax and seal floors
- Vacuum rugs and carpets
- Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork
- Empty and clean waste receptacles
- Wash windows and walls
- Clean restrooms
- Sweep sidewalks and pick up papers
- Mow and water lawns, trees and shrubs and general grounds cleaning
- Clean drinking fountains and polish metal work;
- Fill paper and soap dispensers
- Replace light bulbs; replenish supplies; turn out lights and lock doors and windows
- Guard assigned areas to prevent vandalism
- Assist in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events and meetings including civic center assignments
- Assist in loading/unloading of food transports
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Westside Union School District is located on the west side of the Antelope Valley, 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Our schools serve the communities of Quartz Hill, Lancaster, Palmdale, Leona Valley, and Antelope Acres.
