THE MERIT SYSTEM AND THE PERSONNEL COMMISSION The San Mateo County Office of Education has utilized the Merit System since 1966 to ensure that classified employees are selected, promoted and retained without favoritism or prejudice. The Personnel Commission oversees a Civil Service (Merit) System of personnel management for San Mateo County Office of Education employees. The Merit System is a method of personnel management which is designed to promote the efficiency and economy of the workforce and the good of the public by providing for the selection and retention of employees, promotional opportunities, in-service training, and other related matters on the basis of merit, fitness, and the principle of “like pay for like work."

Job Summary

Appointment will be to fill the Board Appointed seat on the Personnel Commission. This position will be selected by the San Mateo County Board of Education. The Personnel Commission is composed of three Commissioners who serve for a period of three years with one appointment due each year. Regular Commission meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. All meetings are open to the public, administrative officials and representatives of employee organizations. The primary function of the Personnel Commission is to develop and maintain a thorough-ongoing merit system for the non-certificated, or classified employees of the school system and to foster the advancement of a career service for such employees. Authority for this function is provided by the Education Code of the State of California contained in Section 45240 to 45320, inclusive. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible for appointment to the Commission, a person must: • Must be a registered voter and resident within the boundaries of the territorial jurisdiction of San Mateo County Office of Education; and • Must be a known adherent to the principle of the Merit System.
