DEFINITION: Under general supervision, drives to District facilities and performs skilled and semi-skilled grounds, landscaping, gardening and irrigation work. The scope of work is limited and the duties are standardized, and generally follow specific guidelines or established procedures.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: The listed examples are intended to represent typical duties assigned to the classification and may not include all duties that may be assigned. Not every position performs all of the duties listed. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Prepares and maintains landscape (E)
• Controls garden and lawn pests and weeds; determines quantity and type of fertilizer and insecticides to be used. (E)
• Transplants shrubs, trees and flowering plants; prunes shrubs and trees. (E)
• Irrigates trees and shrubs; checks condition of sprinkler systems, makes minor repairs and notifies appropriate staff for more complex repairs. (E)
• Prepares watering schedules; operates power mower, trimmer, and edging equipment; lubricates and makes minor repairs to gardening tools. (E)
• Drives pick-up truck with trailer to transport equipment and trash. (E)
• Requisitions supplies through Lead Groundskeeper.
• Uses computers for training and work orders.
• Uses two-way radio for communication.
• May process work orders; may enter and track computer data.
• Attends staff meetings, in-service activities, workshops, conferences and other training as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three years in gardening and /or grounds maintenance work.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of or ability to read, learn and follow department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and operations.
• Knowledge of methods, supplies, tools used in planting, cultivating and maintaining landscape.
• Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance requirements and ability to use a variety of motorized equipment and hand tools including, but not limited to: trucks, lawn mowers, edgers/trimmers, leaf blowers and sweepers.
• Knowledge of and ability to use radio communications.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and directions.
• Ability to work with interruptions.
• Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and observe legal and defensible driving practices.
• Ability to maintain a professional attitude and behavior and strong customer service focus at all times.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
• Skill and ability to use tact, patience and courtesy in interpersonal relationships, exercise good judgment and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Must be able to meet and maintain eligibility for coverage under the District’s liability insurance carrier.
• Knowledge, skill and ability to use, or willingness to learn and use a two-way radio.
• Possession of or willingness and ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES: The physical requirements below are necessary to perform the essential functions. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable a person with a disability to perform these functions.
• Work environment is a combination of outside gardening work with frequent travel. Requires willingness and ability to drive vehicles on a daily basis in all kinds of weather, and continuously stand, walk, stoop, bend, lift and move about on any District facility to perform landscape maintenance.
• Physical, mental and emotional stamina to work under sometimes stressful conditions, with frequent distractions and interruptions and deal with angry/upset people in a calm and professional manner.
• Sufficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to use a variety of motorized and hand-held tools/equipment, perform gardening work, write, computers and process paperwork.
• Sufficient visual acuity to see and read small print, and drive safely.
• Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person and telephone conversations.
• Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, and on the telephone.
• Sufficient mobility to walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stand, stretch, reach and move around for extended periods of time up to an eight-hour shift (with the exception of breaks and lunch).
• Sufficient mobility to enter/exit vehicles and drive to various locations locally.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

Calculators may be brought in for testing - no cell phone usage. Please report at least 15 minutes prior to testing time, the test will begin promptly. Photo ID is required at check-in. Test results for are valid for two years (24 Months), if you have passed the test for Groundskeeper with our district, you must submit proof of your passing score with your application, attach your test results to your application.
