INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT


BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; assist students in improving their reading, writing, vocabulary, math, computer skills and other subject areas; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; tutor students in assigned subject matters.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and supervise student drills and assignments; assist students with reading, writing, math, computer skills and other subject areas as assigned by the position. E
 
Administer, monitor and score a variety of tests; rephrase materials and explain instructions as needed. E
 
Prepare instructional materials in accordance with grade level, lesson plans and appropriate reading collection; work with students in handwriting, phonics, letter recognition and other activities. E
 
Observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. E
 
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; prepare and maintain student records and cum files as necessary. E
 
Provide support to the teacher by preparing for daily activities, setting up work areas, displays and exhibits; distribute and collect paper, supplies and materials; assist with gathering materials for projects and preparing handouts, folders and classroom worksheets. E
 
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures. E
 
Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; accompany students on field trips as assigned. E
 
Monitor adult and student volunteers in programs including SOAR and others; recruit volunteers and train and advise volunteers as needed; record student and volunteer attendance. E
 
Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned; operate instructional and audio-visual equipment. E
 
Participate in staff meetings and in-services training programs as assigned. E
 
Provide work direction and guidance to volunteers as needed. E
 
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 One year experience working with children in an organized setting.

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list to fill current and future CONTRACTED vacancies. Contracted positions are 15 - 30 hours per week, 9.5 month per year The current vacancies are: Highland Ranch Elementary - 15 hours per week, 9.5 months per year Pomerado Elementary - 16 hours per week, 9.5 months per year Los Penasquitos Elementary - 30 hours per week, 9.5 months per year PUSD Classification Salary Range: $18.53 - $23.71 per hour Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $18.53 per hour (Step 1) - $21.48 per hour (Step 4) Substitute (Limited Term): $18.53 (Step 1)

Candidates who pass all of the examination processes are ranked on an eligibility list according to their score(s). Selection for the position will be made from among the top three (3) ranks of candidates. The eligibility list will be used for hiring purposes in other vacancies in the same, or equivalent, job classification and will be active for six (6) months (Merit Rule 50.100.1). Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential (not substitute credential), or have earned a four-year degree AND passed the CBEST will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification. (You must provide a copy of your current valid CA teaching credential (not substitute credential) or an official transcript AND proof of passing CBEST) *Official Transcripts must be sealed and sent directly to the Personnel Commission. Electronic Transcripts not sent directly to the Personnel Commission will not be considered official or sealed.* Please Note: Positions greater than 20 hours per week will qualify for District health benefits.
