This position serves in a dual role as both the Program Coordinator and the credentialed teacher for the school's Long-Term Independent Study (LTIS) Program while also overseeing the implementation and compliance of the Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) Program for students in Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade. As the Program Coordinator, the employee is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating all aspects of the Independent Study Program to ensure compliance with California Education Code, California Code of Regulations, charter school requirements, Board policies, and administrative procedures. Responsibilities include coordinating student enrollment, overseeing Master Agreements, monitoring student engagement and attendance requirements, supporting classroom teachers with Short-Term Independent Study procedures, maintaining legally required documentation, overseeing state reporting requirements, and serving as the school's primary resource for Independent Study compliance. Because this position may provide instruction to students from Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 12, the
successful candidate must possess the ability to differentiate instruction across multiple grade levels and
subject areas while working within the authorization of their California teaching credential(s).
Essential Responsibilities
Program Coordination
? Coordinate and oversee the daily operation of Redwood Coast Montessori's Long-Term Independent
Study Program.
? Coordinate and oversee the implementation of the Short-Term Independent Study Program for students
in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 12.
? Ensure both Long-Term and Short-Term Independent Study programs remain compliant with all
applicable California Education Code requirements, California Code of Regulations, charter school
laws, Board policies, and administrative regulations.
? Develop, implement, and maintain procedures for both Independent Study programs.
? Coordinate enrollment into the Long-Term Independent Study Program.
? Review and process requests for participation in the Short-Term Independent Study Program.
? Conduct parent and student orientation meetings regarding Independent Study expectations,
responsibilities, timelines, and legal requirements.
? Develop, maintain, monitor, and update Independent Study Master Agreements and all legally required
documentation.
? Coordinate assignment of supervising teachers, instructional materials, and student schedules as
appropriate.
? Support classroom teachers with implementation of Short-Term Independent Study requirements.
? Ensure all required attendance documentation, work samples, learning logs, assignments, and student
engagement records are accurately maintained.
? Maintain accurate student records within SchoolWise and other required student information systems.
? Prepare reports related to attendance, engagement, enrollment, student progress, and program
compliance.
? Coordinate annual updates to Independent Study forms, procedures, and parent communications.
Instruction
? Serve as the supervising credentialed teacher for students enrolled in Long-Term Independent Study.
? Provide high-quality instruction using a variety of instructional methods.
? Develop individualized learning plans aligned with California Content Standards and Redwood Coast
Montessori's educational program.
? Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students across multiple grade levels (TK–12), consistent
with credential authorization.
? Provide synchronous and asynchronous instruction as required by law and Board policy.
? Evaluate student work and provide timely academic feedback.
? Maintain regular instructional contact with students.
? Monitor academic progress and intervene when students are not making satisfactory educational
progress.
? Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding students transitioning between classroom instruction
and Independent Study.
? Administer state assessments, local assessments, and benchmark assessments as assigned.
Student Monitoring and Family Support
? Maintain frequent communication with students and families.
? Schedule and conduct required teacher-student meetings.
? Monitor attendance, participation, assignment completion, academic progress, and student
engagement.
? Identify students who may be at risk academically or behaviorally and coordinate appropriate
interventions.
? Implement intervention procedures when students fail to meet participation or satisfactory educational
progress requirements.
? Recommend changes in placement when Independent Study is no longer determined to be an
appropriate educational setting.
? Support families through transitions into and out of Independent Study.
Short-Term Independent Study Oversight
? Serve as the school-wide coordinator for Short-Term Independent Study serving students in Transitional
Kindergarten through Grade 12.
? Review Short-Term Independent Study requests and ensure all required agreements are completed
prior to the start of Independent Study whenever required by law.
? Coordinate with classroom teachers to ensure instructional continuity and appropriate assignments are
provided.
? Verify completion of assignments and documentation necessary for attendance accounting.
? Monitor timelines for completion of work and required documentation.
? Provide training and ongoing support to staff regarding Short-Term Independent Study requirements
and procedures.
? Ensure Short-Term Independent Study documentation is maintained for audit purposes.
Special Education
? Collaborate with special education staff regarding students with disabilities participating in Independent
Study.
? Participate as an IEP team member when assigned.
? Implement accommodations, modifications, and services identified within Individualized Education
Programs (IEPs).
? Collaborate with IEP teams in determining whether Independent Study is an appropriate placement
based upon individual student needs.
? Maintain knowledge of California special education laws related to Independent Study.
Compliance and Data Management
? Ensure compliance with all Independent Study attendance accounting requirements.
? Maintain legally required documentation for audit purposes.
? Support CALPADS reporting related to Independent Study.
? Maintain confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and state law.
? Monitor compliance with student engagement requirements.
? Coordinate documentation necessary for state audits and compliance reviews.
? Maintain current knowledge of changes in California Independent Study laws and regulations.
? Perform other duties as assigned by the School Director.
Collaboration and Leadership
? Work collaboratively with administration, teachers, counselors, intervention staff, special education
staff, classified staff, and families.
? Participate in Student Success Team (SST), Section 504, and IEP meetings as assigned.
? Assist with transitions between classroom instruction and Independent Study.
? Provide professional development and training related to Independent Study procedures.
? Attend staff meetings, leadership meetings, professional development, and compliance trainings when
requested by the director.
? Serve as a resource to staff regarding Independent Study laws, procedures, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
? Valid California teaching credential(s) authorizing service in the assigned grade levels and subject
areas.
? Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
? Meets all California credentialing requirements applicable to assigned students and instructional
assignments.
? Valid California driver's license.
? Ability to successfully pass all required background clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
? Three (3) or more years of successful teaching experience.
? Experience teaching in a California Independent Study or non-classroom-based program.
? Experience coordinating an Independent Study program.
? Experience working in a California public or charter school.
? Knowledge of California Independent Study laws and regulations.
? Experience with SchoolWise, CALPADS, SEIS, Google Workspace, and educational technology
platforms.
? Experience serving as an IEP team member with knowledge of special education procedures,
compliance, and procedural safeguards.
? Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.
? Knowledge of MTSS, intervention systems, and student support strategies.
? Experience with Montessori philosophy and/or Project-Based Learning.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in classroom, office, and virtual environments. Responsibilities may include virtual
instruction, student conferences, family meetings, home visits (when approved by administration), community
meetings, and occasional evening events. The position requires collaboration with staff serving students across
all grade levels from Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 12.
