General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Specialized Transportation Director, the School Bus Attendant works in conjunction with the School Bus Driver to ensure student compliance with established safety rules during 'to and from school' routes and special activity trips.

Salary:

The hourly compensation range for School Bus Attendants is $18.09 - $21.28. We expect to make offers in the $18.83 - $21.28 per hour range, based on education and experience.

Effective 09/01/2026, the hourly compensation range will be $18.56 - $21.83.

We expect to make offers in the $19.32 - $21.83 per hour range, based on education and experience.

Assignment/Location:

This position will 20-30 hours per week, on a school year schedule. The schedule is a split shift, with both a morning and mid to late afternoon route, Monday to Friday.


Regular attendance required: This role relies on regular and reliable attendance to ensure consistency for our students and help support a positive, productive learning environment. Regular attendance during those hours are expected.



Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:

  1. Work with the School Bus Driver to ensure students comply with established safety rules and laws.
  2. Monitor student behavior during transportation to maintain a safe environment. Promote positive student behavior and respect amoung riders.
  3. Ensure students remain seated and follow bus safety rules.
  4. Secure wheelchairs, seat belts, harnesses, car seats, and other restraint systems as required.
  5. Document and report unsafe student behavior and bus environment to School Bus Driver and supervisor.
  6. Ensure proper use by all passengers of safety belts and other safety equipment.
  7. Attend required safety meetings and training sessions.
  8. Use behavior intervention techniques for all students.
  9. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative communication with students, parents, school staff, bus drivers and supervisors.
  10. Maintain accurate and legible records of daily bus logs and other required documents.
  11. Maintain regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Other Functions:

  1. Participate in staff meetings, inservice programs, workshops, and seminars.
  2. Other related duties as assigned.


Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. At least 18 years of age.
  2. High school diploma or GED.
  3. Ability to successfully complete and maintain a valid first aid and CPR card.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Behavior intervention training.
  2. Experience working with children or adolescents, especially students with disabilities.


Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions:

  1. Ride on special education school bus.
  2. Ability to physically intervene to ensure student safety in accordance with program rules and state and federal laws.
  3. Exposure to communicable diseases found in children and adolescents.
  4. Students may use challenging or offensive verbalizations toward staff and other students with potential for escalation to physical aggression.
  5. Split shift - early morning and mid to late afternoon.
  6. Flexibility to adjust work schedule to accommodate assigned route changes.
  7. Strength and ability to assist students with disabilities in embarking and disembarking a bus; including moving and positioning special needs equipment.

Employment Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  2. Maintain a valid first aid and CPR card.
