SCHOOL BUS INSTRUCTOR/DISPATCHER
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, assists in the planning, organization and coordination of a pupil transportation program; oversees the scheduling and assigning of bus driver personnel; serves at bus driver trainer to maintain the needs of the department; operates a school bus over designated routes for the purpose of transporting students of Escalon Unified School District; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION
- Plans, organizes and conducts of transportation personnel orientation and in-service training programs;
- Conducts behind the wheel, classroom and in-service training as necessary for Bus Driver employees including substitutes;
- Monitor the driving abilities of Bus Drivers;
- Maintain necessary records and files to comply with Department of Education and California Highway Patrol inspections;
- Plans and determines school bus routes and schedules utilizing such factors as traffic conditions, pupil load size, potential road hazards and other factors;
- Plan, review and coordinate changes in bus routes and schedules to obtain maximum utilization of equipment and personnel;
- Travel bus routes and evaluate and report view obstructions and road hazards to the appropriate agency;
- Assign and schedule bus drivers to athletic and special study trips in coordination with the regular pupil transportation scheduling;
- Prepare zone maps and discuss bus routing with the drivers;
- Arranges for and assigns substitute drivers;
- Maintain and compile data and information regarding the pupil transportation program, and prepare concise and clear summaries as required;
- Confer with, counsel and advises transportation, school and administration personnel concerning student behavior management problems, scheduling conflicts and the resolution of complains or problem situations;
- Conduct bus inspections and reports damage, vandalism and needed maintenance;
- Drive a school bus as needed over designated routes in accordance with assigned time schedules;
- Escort children across streets or roadways, stopping traffic as necessary;
- Transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival times as scheduled;
- Operate a school bus and other transportation vehicles in a safe and proper manner;
- Advise on repairs needed;
- Attend scheduled meetings;
- Maintain good order among students on the buses and encourages same while students are waiting at the bus stops, following District policies regarding disciplining of children and contact with parents and others;
- Report incidents which affect the safety of pupils; may make minor repairs to vehicles or performs, as directed;
- Other duties consistent with the general areas of responsibility surrounding the job description.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and Application of:
District policies and procedures as they apply; Safe driving practices and procedures; Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in a pupil transportation program; Methods, procedures, practices and organizational systems pertaining to a comprehensive pupil transportation program; Knowledge of legal mandates, policies, regulations and guidelines of pupil transportation and safety program; Basic safety practices regarding equipment.

- Reach in all directions.
- Perform moderate physical exertion.
- Manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

- Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations
- Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time
Education / Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required
Five (5) years experience as a school bus driver, including experiences of increasing responsibility within the Transportation Department
Additional training in transportation systems, organization and supervision or related area desirable
Completed Department of Education School for Instructors Program
Conditions of Employment:
Possession of a State Department of Education Driver Instructor Certificate
Possession of a valid School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
Possession of an appropriate California operator’s license (Class A or B).
Possession of a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Possession of a current first Aid Card or proof of a passing score on the CHP First Aid Exam.
Possession of a typing certificate verifying 35 wpm dated within the last two years.
Salary Level: 75 - Classified Salary Schedule
