DEFINITION OF POSITION The school counselor provides academic, career, personal and social guidance services which are relevant to the educational needs of each student. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Assists in the planning, development and evaluation of school programs aimed at meeting the needs of students. 2. Provides individual and group counseling services which help students to understand and accept themselves as they are; helps students in the development of personal decision making to resolve special problems. 3. Helps students to make appropriate choices of school programs and to develop long- range plans of study. 4. Provides college preparatory orientations and guidance, and scholarship and financial aid information. 5. Provides career and vocational guidance for students seeking employment or post- secondary vocational training. 6. Collects, coordinates and interprets meaningful information about each student to identify special abilities and needs; shares the information with staff, parents, students and others who are professionally concerned. 7. Serves as liaison between the school and community agencies. 8. Provides individual and group orientation and assistance to students in the transition from one school level to another and from one school to another. 9. Confers with parents and assists them with problems and decisions which relate to the educational welfare of the student. 10. Participates in the development and presentation of the annual commencement ceremonies and scholarship and awards program which recognize student achievement. 11. Provides guidance to students related to the various testing programs; assists with the administration and interpretation of the testing programs. 12. Assists with the development of the Master Schedule. 13. Discusses vocational course possibilities for all students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, or handicapping condition
