CLASSROOM TEACHER - GRADES K - 8 SUPERVISES: None REPORTS TO: Principal and Superintendent EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Certificated TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: School Term only Definition Provides an educational program for pupils in grades Kindergarten through Eighth grade or a combination thereof and assists in other school programs as developed by the staff. Examples of Duties Teaches all or any combination of the following: reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, art, physical education and music to pupils utilizing a course of study adopted by the Board of Trustees and other appropriate learning activities. May teach a foreign language to sixth, seventh or eighth grade pupils. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Provides planned learning experiences in order to motivate pupils and best utilize the available time for instruction. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and/or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Evaluates pupil’s academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports and communicates with parents on the individual pupil’s progress. Identifies pupil needs, seeks assistance and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems. Creates, with assistance from pupils, a functional and attractive environment for learning through displays, bulletin boards and interest centers. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required. Assists in selecting and requisitioning books, instructional aids and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records. Insures a comfortable room environment through control of temperature, lighting and ventilation, to the extent possible. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during teacher’s assigned working hours. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school or assignment and/or on a district level. Shares in the sponsorship of students activities and participates in faculty committees. Plans, coordinates and supervises the work of assigned aides, teacher assistants and other paraprofessionals. Performs such other duties as directed by the Principal and/or Superintendent. Employment Standards: Knowledge of: Subject matter within the domain of the assignment accepted; education theory and delivery strategies, including theories pertaining to multiple intelligences; classroom control and discipline strategies; mandatory reporting laws for educators; laws relating to student privacy rights and confidentiality; and various assessment tools utilized by the district to target specific gaps in student learning. Ability to: Deliver learning experiences to students using all available tools and resources; assess the effectiveness of various delivery strategies and modify them when necessary to the learning of individual students; communicate with students, parents, colleagues, support staff and administrators in an efficient and courteous manner; model the behavior and conduct required of students under district rules; and control the classroom such that the learning environment of many is not impaired by a few. Education and Experience: Completion of degree and post-graduate work in education such that a teaching credential has been awarded or a waiver granted in the area in which the assignment was accepted.
