Job Summary

BASIC FUNCTION Under the general direction of an assigned supervisor, the State Center Adult Education Consortium (SCAEC) Transitions Specialist will work with consortium members and partners to assist students in identifying goals and promote career pathways in order to achieve a successful transition to postsecondary education, training, and/or employment. DUTIES Assist students in the enrollment and transition process to other educational institutions, Workforce Assistance Centers, and partner services. Complete a transitions plan for students and follow up with student progress toward their goals. Monitor student academic progress and provide appropriate intervention to achieve success. Provide assistance with college applications, financial aid, and scholarship information. Collaborate with site administrators and staff to determine the needs of the school and students. Facilitate collaboration between adult schools, partner organizations, and community colleges. Develop and maintain outreach efforts with counselors, faculty and support service partners. Maintain a focus on equity and access in all program areas and activities. Maintain and increase relationships with all stakeholders. Design and deliver oral presentations and workshops to include panel presentations, group presentations, and one-on-one sessions. Participate in conferences, meetings, training, and webinars for adult education programs and student support services. Keep abreast of educational and student support programs to provide accurate and timely information to adult education students, staff, and partner organizations. Monitor and prepare reports related to student achievement, referrals, career goals, and college entrance/acceptance. Keep accurate student records and maintain confidentiality. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree – school counseling, counseling psychology, social work, education, or related field. PREFERRED California Pupil Personnel Services Credential with authorization in School Counseling. Master’s Degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard. Experience in community outreach, including public speaking. Experience with the California Adult Education Program. Bilingual in Spanish. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Operation of a computer to enter data, maintain records and generate reports. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Oversee and perform various duties related to assisting and transitioning students to other entities according to their education/career goals. Learn new or updated computer and programs to apply to current work. Communicate using patience and courtesy in a manner that reflects positively on the organization. Apply integrity and trust in all situations. Actively participate in meeting program goals and outcomes. Learn program organization, operations, policies, objectives, and goals. Ability to work with adults and have a sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of adult education students. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; meet schedules and timelines; establish and maintain a positive team attitude; communicate effectively. WORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT: School site environment; driving a personal vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time; ability to operate a computer and other office equipment; ability to lift, carry, push or pull boxes, equipment, and carts which may include bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to retrieve or store materials; the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; must be able to exchange accurate information; the ability to observe details at close range.
