JOB SPECIFICATION
PROGRAM SPECIALIST
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to facilitate services connected with the Resource Specialist Program, Designated Instruction and Services, and Special Day Classes in planning and providing instruction for individuals with special needs.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director Special Education
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
- Assists in the implementation of state and federal law to maintain district compliance.
- Plans programs, coordinates curricular resources, and assists district in evaluation the effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs.
- Responsible for assuring that pupils have full educational opportunity.
- Coordinates special education services with Riverside County Office of Education Special Education Programs and NonPublic Schools and Agencies and community agencies.
- Assists in planning and implementation of staff development and innovation of special methods and approaches through staff development activities.
- Participates as a member of IEP teams as appropriate.
- Assists special education personnel in implementing and coordinating the services in the IEP.
- Serves as a resource in the identification, selection and use of instructional materials, curriculum and methodologies.
- Assists in the articulation of special education students between elementary, junior high and secondary schools.
- Maintains knowledge of current laws and regulations pertaining to individuals with exceptional needs and may be assigned to prepare complaint, mediation, and due process materials.
- Consults and advises site staffs regarding specific needs of students.
- Coordinates placement into and out of special day classes.
- Participates in the evaluation of personnel as delegated by Director and/or as requested by principals.
- Chairs necessary committees.
- Coordinates extended year program.
- Review and develop forms to facilitate the Special Education process.
- Assist in the development of manuals, handbooks and other materials as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
- All areas of elementary and secondary curriculum and recent educational research in the education of individuals with exceptional needs.
- Current law and regulation pertaining to individuals with exceptional needs.
Ability to:
- Develop and coordinate programs.
- Negotiate and resolve conflicts and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Deal effectively with parents, teachers, administrators and students.
- Maintain high standards of professionalism.
- Organize and manage time effectively.
- Work both collaboratively and independently.
- Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills.
Education and Experience:
Credential in special education, pupil personnel services, adapted physical education with a minimum of five years of experience in special education. An advanced degree in special education is preferred. Administrative services credential.
WORK YEAR: 214 days
SALARY: Administrative Salary Schedule
