Job Summary
Under the supervision of the assigned supervisor, assist certificated staff in the instruction, supervision, training and physical care of deaf and hard of hearing students; provide sign language interpretation; responsibly perform a variety of instructional services and clerical support activities within a well-defined framework of policies, procedures and objectives; use sound judgment and initiative in working and providing physical care with deaf and hard of hearing students; and do other related work as required. Knowledge of: -Proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation -Sign Language(s) such as ASL or SEE and interpreting skills including sign-to-voice, voice-to-voice sign, and transliteration ability -Basic concepts of child growth, development and behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to the special needs and limitations of deaf or hard of hearing individuals -General classroom procedures, purposes, goals and methods of education -Positive discipline and behavior management techniques
Requirements / Qualifications
Education and Experience: - Instructional Assistant I: Equivalent to graduation from high school and any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities. - Instructional Assistant II: Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree, or completion of at least sixty (60) semester units from an accredited college or university. - Instructional Assistant III: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. License, Certificate and Testing Requirements: - Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. - Candidates for Instructional Assistant I who do not possess an AA degree, completion of at least sixty (60) semester units of college coursework, or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university must successfully pass an approved Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test with a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. - Candidates meeting the educational requirements for Instructional Assistant II or Instructional Assistant III are deemed to have satisfied the proficiency requirement and are not required to complete the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test. - Must be able to provide your own reliable transportation to work sites within Kings County. - Transport students from time to time as required, in a county office vehicle. - Participate in random alcohol and controlled substances testing as delineated in Superintendent Policy 4112.42, 4212.42, 4312.42 and Administrative Regulation 4112.42, 4212.42 and 4312.42. **Please view the job description for more information.**
