Torrance Unified was established in 1947 and unified in 1948, and is nestled in the heart of the South Bay, in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County. Our District is bordered by the Palos Verdes Peninsula on the south, the beach cities - Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beach - to the west, and the cities of Lawndale and Hawthorne to the north. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Torrance Adult School provides a comprehensive  ESL Program for our community. With an average annual enrollment of 1400 ESL  students, the  program offers leveled classes ranging from  Beginning ESL Literacy  (Level 1) to Advanced (Level 6) ESL, as well as electives such as Conversation and Citizenship preparation.  The ESL Department also partners with the CTE Department to offer IET (Integrated Education and Training) classes. The ESL  program includes in-person, online and hybrid distance learning options to help meet students’ needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Instruct multi-level adult ESL students using content-based instruction and communicative teaching methodologies

• Differentiate and scaffold instruction for various English proficiency levels

• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning for all students

• Assess students’ English language proficiency and progress

• Integrate technology into ESL instruction to develop students’ digital literacy skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in ESL, TESOL, ESOL

• CA Designated Subjects Adult Education Credential with ESL authorization OR CA K-12 credential authorizing instruction in courses organized primarily for adults

• 3 years of ESL classroom teaching experience in an adult learning environment

• Demonstrated use of current, student-centered teaching methods, including instructional technology

• Ability to use technology effectively for classroom management (attendance, etc.)

• Experience teaching a diverse, foreign-born student population

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Have a working understanding of Workforce Investment Opportunity Act

• Have experience working with CASAS student exams including the administration of the exam.

• Possess experience preparing students for the CASAS and EL Civics exams.

• Possess working experience with College and Career Readiness Standards

• Understand the emphasis of instructing students for career readiness and student preparation for the workforce.

• Ability to modify and/or develop curriculum when needed, based upon student needs

• Online teaching and learning experience
