Installs, modifies, and makes minor repairs to personal computer hardware and software systems and provides technical assistance and training to system users by performing the duties listed below. Assists in the maintenance and support of LAN and WAN networking systems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Installs or assists service personnel in installation of hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers and disk drives on user’s premises. Loads specified software packages such as operating systems, word processing or spreadsheet programs into computer. Enters commands and observes system functions to verify correct system operation. Responds to client inquiries concerning systems operation and diagnoses system hardware, software and operator problems. Instructs users in use of equipment, software and manuals. Recommends or performs minor remedial actions to correct problems. Coordinates activities with help desk, network services or other information systems groups. Provides updates, status and completion information to manager, problem request tracking system and/or users, visa voice mail, e-mail or in-person communication. Replaces defective or inadequate software packages. Refers major hardware problems to service personnel for correction. Other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS Experience in operation and support of computers and networking systems. Knowledge of major networking software. Working knowledge of IBM compatible systems and familiarity with the Macintosh system. Knowledge of networking hardware systems. Neat personal appearance. Ability to work effectively with students and staff; ability to troubleshoot problems. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High School Diploma. At least one year of experience supporting a significant computer network or lab. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or craw. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
