Basic Function

The job of Special Education Technician is done for the purpose/s of coordinating and monitoring of special education processes and systems, including student database, working with principals and special education staffs; providing information related to the special education processes and procedures regarding the implementation of the IEP provision and special education compliance. 

This job reports to DESIGNATED ADMINISTRATOR

 

Representative Duties

Essential Functions

  • Compiles various student IEP information and activities (e.g. statistical data, pupil counts, etc.) for the purpose of meeting current and future needs for IEP compliance.
  • Establishes various complex data collection, filing and record keeping systems for operational unit for the purpose of maintaining and providing an up-to-date information data base.
  • Evaluates IEPs for completion and accuracy, makes corrections, and informs appropriate staff of IEPs that are out of compliance for the purpose of meeting current and future needs for IEP compliance.
  • Inputs special education data, site reports, and student transportation needs (e.g. IEP, SEIS, etc.) for the purpose of of ensuring accuracy of data.
  • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files, and databases (e.g. SEIS, and CASEMIS, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established practices and guidelines.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and machines (e.g. copier, fax machine, calculator, collator, scanner, computer and assigned software, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring jobs are completed in a timely manner and meet established guidelines.
  • Performs a variety of records management and data control processes for the purpose of ensuring effective and efficient organization, implementation, and interpretation of special education policies.
  • Processes a variety of documents and materials for the purpose of providing confidential records/files in response to requests from District and out-of District personnel.
  • Provides technical information to various individuals for the purpose of troubleshooting special education IEP related software and related problems while delivering support in a timely manner.
  • Responds to inquiries relating to special education IEP system from a variety of sources, receives complaints, and initiates action for the purpose of resolving problems and issues, providing information, and/or direction to other sources.

Marginal Functions  

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the special education department.

 

 

Initial/Minimum Qualifications

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school OR General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of job-related experience.
  • Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing computer technology and programs; utilizing telephone techniques and etiquette; record-keeping

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: proper office methods and procedures; proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and English usage; diverse cultural communities and backgrounds; child guidance principles/practices; California Special Education Information System(CASEMIS) preferred, Special Education Information System (SEIS) preferred; and data control procedures and data entry operations. 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: and utilizing initiative, independent judgment and

decision making; abilities regarding special education compliance and procedures and using tact, patience and courtesy; planning and organizing work; and establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; monitoring budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 10%walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
