Job Summary

Job Summary

The College Counselor works on a team with three other full-time College Counselors and as part of the CCHS Counseling Office. He or she is responsible for guiding students through the successful transition to post-secondary education. He or she must have knowledge of college admissions and financial aid topics and processes.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Skills/Qualifications: Exceptional people skills. Must have a strong initiative and desire to work in a highly collaborative environment. Demonstrated skills and knowledge of school counseling. Excellent time management skills and outstanding communication skills. An appreciation for the Catholic spiritual and intellectual traditions and a willingness and comfort to infuse the Catholic faith throughout the guidance department. A MA/MS degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university is required. A California Clear PPS Credential in School Counseling/Guidance is preferred. High school experience preferred. Who You Are: A practicing Catholic or a person who can embrace a position within a faith-filled environment

What You Will Do: Be familiar with and supportive of the educational philosophy of the school and the Diocese of San Diego and accept the obligations of Christian witness Embrace the use of technology as an educational tool Observe the school calendar and be available to students and parents before and after school Fulfill the normal workload of a full-time counselor, which shall include: Minimally, being present on campus from 7:30 am until 2:45 pm Holding conferences with students and parents Attending faculty meetings, department meetings and other school meetings as necessary Meeting the yearly expectation for professional development and spiritual growth Cooperating fully with the school’s religious activities Exercising proper supervision and care of all furniture, electronic devices, books, supplies, equipment, rooms and buildings entrusted to use Observing professional ethics and maintaining confidentiality in dealing with administrators, faculty, students, parents and the public Being present at faculty retreat, Open House, Back-to-School Night, Baccalaureate Mass and the graduation ceremony Junior Year: Meet with students in caseload in a group setting and individually in their junior year (spring) to advise and guide students through the college fit, application and selection process Write letters of recommendation on behalf of students for college admission as well as for scholarships, internships and other opportunities Host junior parent college information nights during the school year. Prepare content and secure speakers on a variety of admissions topics Host junior parent Coffee with Counselor meeting Provide advice and assistance in junior student course selection and its impact on college selection Senior Year: Meet with students in caseload in a group setting and individually in their senior year (fall) to complete the application process Host Financial Aid Night for senior parents to help and provide guidance to students and families on the overall financial aid process Host senior parent college information nights during the school year. Prepare content and secure speakers on a variety of admissions topics Host senior parent Coffee with the Counselor meeting Additional Responsibilities: Maintain individual student academic records to include transcript checks, graduation evaluations, ineligibility reports, student meetings and CCHS schedule changes Implement and facilitate a comprehensive first-generation student and parent program Host College Fair at CCHS and college representatives for visits at CCHS with other College Counselors, create and present student workshops regarding college admission topics (i.e., college applications, essay writing and college fit) Possess knowledge of and experience with the Naviance software program and provide training and support to students, parents and teachers in its use Participate in professional development opportunities that will contribute to the individual’s professional growth and keep the college counseling and counseling and mentoring programs abreast of current developments in college admissions (e.g., a College Counseling Certificate) Network and collaborate with college admission representatives, visit college campuses, attend college/university conferences and related conferences Maintain membership and relations with appropriate college organizations (NACAC, College Board, etc.) Provide personal/social and crisis counseling as needed
