MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

 

THE POSITION

 

Under general supervision, teaches one or more classes in the field of Physical Education to students in grades 6 through 8, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical education to middle school students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic physical education subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program, adapting daily schedules to accommodate weather conditions and to provide time for changing clothes, showers, instructions, exercise and physical activities.
  • Develops written plans for instruction, demonstrates and explains basic skills, shows knowledge and strategies in sports, games, rhythms, fundamentals of body movement, and fitness.
  • Provides individual and cooperative group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the pupils with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Exhibits appropriate conduct in the handling of student emergencies.
  • Maintains school standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment, in cooperation with the school administration.
  • Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and equipment and organized storage areas and controls use of materials and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Selects and requisitions materials, equipment, books, etc., which support the District curriculum, and maintains inventory records.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method he/she will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines and state law.
  • Communicates with parents, counselors, teachers and advisors on student progress, attending meetings designed to assist in individual student development.
  • Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities, including supervision of students when out of the classroom.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

  • Valid California Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, including all courses to meet credential requirements.

 

Training and Experience:

  • Student teaching, internship, or full time teaching experience.

 

Personal Qualities:

  • Appearance, grooming and personality, which establish a desirable example for students.
  • Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.
  • Above average recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have observed the characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher.

 

WORK YEAR:         185 days
