DEFINITION The teacher directs the program for and teaches students with special needs in a primarily self contained class the basic learning and other subject matter commensurate with the emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the pupil. The teacher also provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes and social skills. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Assesses the needs of individual pupils and plans an appropriate program of individualized instruction based upon school, home and community environments. Provides individualized or small group instruction in the least restrictive environment to pupils whose emotional and/or behavioral problems have resulted in marked academic retardation and severe developmental delays. Prepares instructional materials for pupils having a possible grade level span for below kindergarten through grade twelve Confers with professional and support staff on student’s progress on IEP goals and objectives.. Confers with general education teachers to plan opportunities for pupils to engage in interactions within a general education setting along with typical peers (specials, field trips, etc.) Provides specialized instruction to pupil to meet the goals and objectives as developed in the students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEP) Plan, coordinate, and monitor the work of the instructional aides in the classroom. Prepares standard-based lesson plans, materials, and classroom strategies as appropriate for the students’ level(s). Assist in toileting, feeding, dressing, and automotive loading as necessary Implements classroom behavior management techniques as well as individualized behavior support plans as needed.
