PARAEDUCATOR

Instructional assistants for combination classes or for special classes such as Title I, Resource Specialist Program and Special Day Class are employed as needed and funded within the particular program budgets.

 

DEFINITION:

Under supervision, to assist a general education or specialist teacher in instruction by performing prescriptive tutoring as well as non-instructional classroom tasks.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Assess students for placement in program and ongoing progress.
  • Clerical tasks such as taking attendance, correcting tests or assignments, preparing work sheets and other study materials, filing materials and data entry of grades or assignments.
  • Assists with learning activities, as directed, to improve motor skills, auditory and visual memory, auditory and visual association, hearing, sound blending and expression of language.
  • Observes and records work performance and social behavior in other class settings or on playground.
  • Receives training in, and under direction, uses various programmed materials specific to learning problems or disabilities of each student.
  • Supervision of students.
  • Acquire, set up, operate and return instructional equipment.
  • Tutors individual students as well as small groups.
  • Under direction, uses contingency management or positive behavior intervention techniques unique to the individual problems of each student.
  • Under direction, assembles and disseminates information pertaining to Student Study Team (SST) meetings and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.
  • Assists substitute through knowledge of student performance and special needs.
  • Under direction, provides assistance to other classroom teachers as students mainstream into general education classroom.
  • Maintains a high degree of confidentiality regarding students’ personal information.
  • Administers minor first aid and health services to students.
  • Provide health related information to children and/or their parents.
  • Assist with the identification of at risk children and families and refer them to the proper agencies for services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of position: trustworthy and confidential.
  • Ability and knowledge to work with special needs students in a sensitive, patient and nurturing manner.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.
  • Present a professional appearance.
  • Willingness to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.
  • Possesses ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work one-on-one with students.
  • Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers maintaining friendly relationships with a sensitivity for students with special needs.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Meets No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Criteria.
  • High School graduate.
  • Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certificates in First Aid and CPR.
  • Previous experience working with school-age children preferred.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position may require heavy physical labor including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials.
  • Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
  • Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Position requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
