THE POSITION: The Coordinator I, Reading/Language Arts, shall act as a resource specialist to professional and technical personnel in grades K-6 reading and language arts programs with emphasis at the elementary level; conduct in-service training; facilitate instructional programs; assess and determine program needs; implement program objectives; and perform related duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from other classes in the following ways: This position requires specialized subject matter expertise in reading/language arts education at the elementary level, including deep knowledge of elementary literacy issues, including science of reading research and strategies for addressing the needs of beginning readers, struggling readers/writers, including English language learners, non-standard English speakers, and/or students with disabilities, as well as directly related experience. The Coordinator I shall provide training for teachers and administrators on research-based best practices for teaching literacy skills to elementary students. Under general direction, the Coordinator I meets with teachers, coaches and administrators and other staff to coordinate information and activities regarding data, policies, procedures, and alternatives in the area of language arts instruction. The Coordinator I will not be responsible for the supervision of others.

Requirements / Qualifications

Experience: Five or more years of comprehensive, directly related and progressive teaching experience, including some experience working with students who exhibit literacy difficulties. Site or district level literacy coaching experience is desired. Education: A Bachelor’s degree and appropriate teaching credentials from an institution of higher learning accredited by one of the six regional accreditation associations as recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. A Master’s degree is preferred. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: (All applicants must attach credential with document number to their application. Please do not attach the certificate copy of your Credential.): •Possess a valid California teaching credential. •Possess and maintain a valid Administrative Services Credential. •A reading credential or certificated required.
