DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision, to operate a school bus over designated routes to transport students. Typical duties will include, but are not limited to, maintaining approved time schedules and, when necessary, choosing the best alternate route, escorting students across hazardous traffic areas, stopping traffic when necessary, administering approved District policies regarding student conduct on buses. Other duties will include maintaining daily working records, performing safety checks on transportation equipment, servicing buses with gas and oil and performing general cleaning of buses. Performs other related duties as assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles; possession of PS Endorsement; possession of CHP permit to operate a school bus; maintain a driving record acceptable for coverage under District vehicle insurance programs.

Possession of first aid qualifications comparable to the standard American Red Cross first aid certificate.

QUALIFICATION:

Knowledge of:
- Safe driving practices;
- Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school children;
- First aid practices;
- Geography and road systems of the local area.

AND

Ability to:
- Drive a school bus safely and efficiently;
- Maintain order among students on a bus;
- Learn designated bus routes, stops and local traffic hazards;\
- Follow oral and written directions;
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

AND

Training and experience:
- Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be: Two years of general driving experience, preferably with large vehicles.

Physical Abilities:

• Lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to a minimum of 60 pounds with a strength factor of moderately heavy work

• Sitting for extended periods of time while operating a transportation vehicle

• Frequent neck flexion, extension, and rotation

• Occasional bending and twisting at the waist, kneeling, squatting, or crouching

• Hearing and Speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone/radio

• Reaching, pulling, and pushing to operate bus doors.

• Lifting moderately heavy objects

• Occasional walking and standing

• See to read a variety of materials and to assist students

• Possess strength and physical dexterity to pull children from bus in case of accident

• Climbing a minimum of 5 steps to enter and exit the school bus

• Stooping and bending when cleaning the bus

This position runs from June 08, 2026, through July 10, 2026. June 19th and July 3rd are paid holidays.
